That case has digital auto-termination. However, it seems a bit absurd to hook up a 730MB HD to a device that can only see 80MB, so I bought an old Apple Crate HD with a Seagate 60MB drive in it. I'm not sure it's even compatible with the W30. Anyway, when I try to run that setup, the W30 start to boot off of the system diskette, but will not get past the "Welcome to the world..." screen. I tried putting the APS case in the chain after the Apple Crate to use its termination, but it was no use. The Apple Crate has DB25 connectors, so it's a bit hard to find a terminator. One thing I'm not sure about is how to set the SCSI ID number on the case. It has three jumpers, and although I tried switching these around, I had no luck. Any thoughts? ___________________________________________________________ _|ames \/\/. One of the formats it supports is the Roland S-50/550 disk images made with the "Samdisk" utility - and it can convert the individual patches into Windows .WAV files (among other things),making the sounds easy to edit with standard tools in Windows. Only problem is,I don't have a good ftp site to give you to download a copy of Convert 1.4 anymore. I originally found it on a Soundblaster AWE-32 support site somebody set up,but the site has since moved around a couple times and I've lost track of it. (I guess Convert 1.4 is popular with owners of the Soundblaster AWE-32 card because it can work with their .SBK sound bank format also.) You may want to ask around though...... If there is, would > someone explain to me how to, after I download it, m ake it usable? > > Thanks... > > Doug > > PS, just in case, I'm a Mac user and don't know which utility I need to > convert it to a usable Roland disk, all assistance is greatly appreciated. On the FTP site there is a utility called samdisk for the Mac I believe the name is SMAC. There is instructions on how it works in a text file I saw in the archive a while ago. The concept is to read an entire Roland Sample disk into a single file. Then this file can be expanded to re-create the original disk with the same type of utility. Since I am a Mac user also, around the time we talked about the design of the SamDisk utility, I first used a Mac utility called DART which is a Disk Archive program. It reads several formats including the Roland Sampler disk and is also good for making copies of Roland Sample disks without using the sampler. This program should also be on the archive. The only problem with DART is that it only runs on the Mac and to the best of my knowledge isn't supported by other utilities. The concept of the Samdisk utility is that provided you have a computer (Mac, PC, etc.) that can run it, you can share Roland Sampler disks. The wonderful part about the Samdisk utility is that it does more than just help you transfers the sample disks through a modem and the net (which is pretty wonderful I have to say!), it also allows some cataloging and extraction of the Tone samples which can be saved to be playable on the Mac. It also is a good way to get a listing of each disk in a machine readable format. Hope this helps! David A. Am I close ? Have not done this myself, but that seems to be how the manual describes it. 2 caveats: 1. Re the gig drive: don't bother. The S-7xx series recognizes up to 600 meg only. 2. If you like analogue sequences, basses, effects, and such you love this one. $65 or best offer. (2) AMG's producer series "Now CD-ROM" for the S-760. Gives a taste of AMG's producer series (500MB +). Includes works by Vince Clarke, Keith LeBlanc, Joey Negro, Neil Conti, JJ JecZalik, David Ruffy and many others. If you want a variety of sounds, instruments, drums (esp. many different beats sorted by bpm), than this is a great sampling of what AMG can offer. $65 or best offer. (3) Finally, XX-Large "Analogue Dreams" CD-ROm for the S-760. 500+ MB of the ultimate analogue synth collection, all looped perfectly. Includes, but nowhere near limited to: Roland MKS-80, Super Jupiter, Seq. Great if you need a complete archive of those old-time sounds. $150 or best offer. Also, the NEC Multispin 4Xe (quad speed-external) SCSI ready (50-pin) is for sale. I have used it w/my 7-60 and it works fine. I will part with it for $300 (4 mos.old--new was $550) or best offer. Sorry, but I don't know what "mechanism" the drive is. If you want, you can call NEC and ask them if it is compatible with your system (if you dont have a 760, but otherwise it is). The model # is CDR-601. It is such a pain to do all the remapping manually that is done on the S-330 (unlike the S-550 and I assume others) that I wondered if someone has already done this. The Roland Sample Libray has Alto Sax with Bari and Tenor with Soprano sax on another disk but not Alto Sax and Tenor Sax together on the same disk. The S-330 software isn't good about merging all tones with their patches from other disks. It has no way (that I know of) to preserve things and remap them. I was told that it does this on the S-550. So maybe someone with a S-550 can load these two things together on the same disk and save it as S-330 or S-50 and I would be as pleased as punch! :-) Come to think of it, this would be a neat feature to add to the SAMDISK utilties. I would much rather prefer to have sort of a patch menu (like on the Mac using Performer) and select what I want and where it should be placed. It could certainly be made easier to do, IMHO, than on the Roland. Best regards, David A. Their current status is the following : wdir : lists all the tones on a W30 disk. tonedump : lists (some of) the parameters of a given tone ( merely for debugging/example) winit : inits a formatted disk so that it is recognized by the W-30. wget : extracts a tone from a W30 disk and write it into .wav format. ( 8/16 bits output now supported ). wput !!! : converts a .wav files and write it as a W30 tone. Supports stereo files. This means that you can now use your PC to edit/transfer W-30 waves. It is something I'm wanting to have since 8 years (?). There is of course improvement that has to be done but I'll post this first draft. My intention is to put everything ( source code / executables ) on the lotus server but unfortunately I'm off the list and misses the administrator's address. So if anyone could send it to me, i'll be glad to send him the whole bunch of things. I've been looking for the" wput" utility for a long time. It would be very nice if you made it available at the Lotus.UWaterloo.ca ftp site. I've just checked the site for the administrator's address. The file" pub/sgroup/README.Upload" at Lotus sais: "If you have something that you would like to upload to the sgroup archive, please contact John Sellens jmsellens@watdragon.uwaterloo.ca to arrange it. There is no publically writeable directory here on lotus.uwaterloo.ca." By the way, I would be very thankful if you could send me a version of the wput.exe by email directly (it must probably be uuencoded) or maybe better, to the sgroup mailing list. It is a Windows program, and will convert from W-30 to S-550. It does not convert the other way, as the W-30 understands the S-550 format perfectly well (I guess....:). S550lib is on lotus, you need version 2.0.
