I just bought one so I'm not the best person to answer these questions but here goes my best shot. 1. It uses 72 pin SIMMs. 2. The S760 must have two slots - two 16Meg SIMMs will give the beast 32Meg. Use smaller capacity SIMMs and you also get to use the 2Meg that comes internal to the unit. 3. It can convert load W30 and S550 sounds. 4. I saw nothing in the manual about loading sounds from other manufacturers. 5. It seems to be usable without the monitor but I'd get the option for the digital ins and outs even if you wish to continue to use the front panel display. 6. I don't know if there is an S760 FAQ. It uses 72 pin SIMMs. True, but Roland specs things a little tighter than that - I believe they have to be non-composite, all chips on one side. When I've called Roland tech support about audio problems (one system bug, one hardware problem), the first thing they ask about is the SIMMs, and if I bought them from one of their few official providers (who tend to be more expensive than the rest of the market). For the record, I got my 16 meg SIMMs from a non-authorized place (Tahoe Peropherals in Nevada), for $495 cash, and they work fine. > 3. It can convert load W30 and S550 sounds. 4. I saw nothing > in the manual about loading sounds from other manufacturers. The Convert Load page, which is used to load samples from the W30 and S550, can also be used to load Akai S1000 sounds. This isn't mentioned at all in the manual, which I find odd - but I've tried it and it works, mostly. (Some problems, especially when the S1000 sounds use layering or velocity switching.) No Ensoniq support - I'm dumping my EPS 16+ sounds into Alchemy, and then back out to the S760. - Dan From lotus.uwaterloo.ca!owner-sgroup Thu Mar 23 07:18:32 1995 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca ([129.97.140.9]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <88185-2>; Thu, 23 Mar 1995 07:18:20 -0500 Received: by lotus.uwaterloo.ca id <137>; Thu, 23 Mar 1995 06:40:23 -0500 Received: from sun2.mhs-relay.ac.uk ([128.86.8.35]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <28>; Thu, 23 Mar 1995 06:39:29 -0500 Via: uk.ac.lon.wye; Thu, 23 Mar 1995 11:39:08 +0000 Date: Thu, 23 Mar 1995 06:39:41 -0500 Via: jana.wye.lon.ac.uk; Thu, 23 Mar 95 11:39:41 GMT Received: from MICROLAB1/SMTPMAIL by microlab1.wye.lon.ac.uk (Mercury 1.12); Thu, 23 Mar 95 11:46:43 GMT Received: from SMTPMAIL by MICROLAB1 (Mercury 1.12); Thu, 23 Mar 95 11:46:17 GMT Received: from [192.195.116.200] by microlab1.wye.lon.ac.uk (Mercury 1.12); Thu, 23 Mar 95 11:46:08 GMT X-Sender: pbb_mb@192.195.116.1 Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" To: sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From: pbb_mb@wye.lon.ac.uk (Mark A Bennett) Subject: sgroup HARD DRIVE_FORMATING!!!!! Thanks, Dan, for the SIMM scoop. But what does "non-composite" mean? (Or did you already define that for me when you said all chips on one side?) I said: > 3. This isn't mentioned > at all in the manual, which I find odd - but I've tried it and it works, This is good to know. It's nice to know that I didn't miss spotting it in the manual (because it isn't there!). I, too, find it strange that it isn't PROMINENTLY spelled out in the manual. That is a great selling point of a sampler and they're all starting to "cross dress" samples from other machines. Will it work on floppies as well as CD-ROM?
