Well for those who are DAT-less, that is the only 'all-digital' way to acheive a reverse sample loop on the S50. You definitely hit on one of the many 'round-about' methods required in the S-50 OS :-) And if you're into interesting samples, here is one of my favorite tricks. Take a dense sound (like shortwave noise or out of control feedback) or some sort of interesting dense rhythm, sample it, and slow it wayyyy down. You can get some real gorgeous textures/rhythms and make cool loops. All I've heard is silence on the sgroup user library front. Are you still alive George? Has anyone taken it over? Since the Roland S-50 sampler has the ability to provide the user with a RGB color monitor output, why not put your Atari color monitor to good use? Normally, when creating and editing samples, your Atari computer is not being used anyway. What makes this project easy is that you are simply making a modified extension cable to connect the Atari monitor to the sampler. What makes this project inexpensive is the fact that the total investment in parts is under eleven dollars! --- MAKE IT --- The two connectors needed for the cable are an 8-pin male DIN connector and a 13-pin female Atari connector. Before connecting any wires, make sure you are using a low wattage soldering iron with a very fine tip. The pins on the female Atari connector are very close together and large ended soldering irons could cause some problems. Soldering pins 6 and 7 on the female Atari connector can be somewhat difficult because of the tight quarters. Before starting to solder any wires in place, hold the female Atari connector with vise grip pliers and use a pair of needlenose pliers to carefully remove the leads for pins 2 and 3 by pulling them up and out. These two pins are not needed since there are no wires to connect to them. This will give you a larger working area to maneuver the soldering iron when soldering wires in place. I recommend using a 3 to 4 foot cable but if you feel that the Atari monitor cable is long enough, you can use a very short cable to create an 8-pin to 13-pin "adaptor". After stripping and preparing the wires for soldering, make sure the plug covers and strain reliefs are properly placed over the cable (I always seem to forget to put these in place before it's too late). Follow the wiring diagram below. After soldering the six wires in place, make sure they match the wiring diagram and check the base of both connectors for any shorts due to excess solder. PINOUTS S-50 ATARI 13-PIN 8-PIN DIN MALE FEMALE GROUND 2 <-----> 13 GREEN HSYNC 4 <-----> 9 RED VSYNC 5 <-----> 12 HSYNC RED 6 <-----> 7 BLUE GREEN 7 <-----> 6 VSYNC BLUE 8 <-----> 10 GROUND --- TEST IT --- The cable acts as an adaptor and plugs into the existing cable on the Atari monitor. (NOTE: If you have a JVC style Atari monitor with a removeable cable adaptor, do not remove it). Before connecting the cable to the sampler and monitor, * ENSURE THAT BOTH THE SAMPLER AND MONITOR ARE TURNED OFF! * After connecting the cable, turn on the monitor and sampler and you should see a nice legible display. If the screen looks somewhat distorted at the top or bottom, you may need to turn down the brightness and/or contrast levels of the monitor. If the distortion persists, adjust the HHold potentiometer on the back of the monitor. Be sure to use a non-metalic screwdriver or similar tool to adjust the potentiometer. This adjustment is quite easy since you do not need to remove the monitor cover. If the display looks alright then you are ready to edit samples using the luxury of a quality RGB monitor. NOTE: 1) The S-550/220/330 sampler MIGHT work with this same cable if the pinouts are the same, but, it is untested. 2) The author assumes no responsibility for modifications 3) Similar results may be possible using RGB color monitors other than the ATARI SC1224 --- PARTS LIST --- 8-Pin Male DIN Connector Part # LXS81 13-Pin Female Atari Connector Part # ATR13FSD 12 Conductor Shielded Cable Part # BCL-12S-10 (Fewest conductors and shortest cable available from ORA Electronics) Low Wattage Soldering Iron With Pencil Thin Tip Needlenose Pliers Vise Grip Pliers Wire Stripper Solder All Parts Available From; ORA Electronics 9410 Owensmouth Ave. Chatsworth, CA 91313 1-800-423-5336 ($25.00 min. order) From lotus.uwaterloo.ca!sgroup-owner Thu Jul 1 01:10:36 1993 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca ([129.97.140.9]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <88159-2>; Thu, 1 Jul 1993 01:10:30 -0400 Received: from relay2.geis.com ([192.77.188.3]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <156>; Thu, 1 Jul 1993 01:07:17 -0400 Received: by relay2.geis.com (1.37.109.4/15.6) id AA18948; Thu, 1 Jul 93 06:07:28 +0100 From: k.meiere1@genie.geis.com Message-Id: <9307010507.AA18948@relay2.geis.com> Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1993 00:58:00 -0400 To: sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Subject: ContinuousLoopingReverseSample X-Genie-Id: 4779133 X-Genie-From: K.MEIERE1 Status: R A tip for Roland S-50 sampler owners. This might also apply to S-550/220/330 samplers since the operating systems are almost identical; ------------------------------------ I like to create very unusual samples, so one of the most useful functions for me is the REVERSE sample mode. Unfortunately, there appears to be no easy way on the menu to create a 'continuous-looping-reverse' sample. At least, I was unable to find any mention of it in the users manual. The ALTernate Loop Mode plays it forward and backward, and REVERSE Loop Mode only plays the sample once. These two modes are not quite what I need. I found the long way around to create a 'continuous-looping-reverse' sample. - Press the EDIT button to call up Edit choices 11 PATCH PRM, etc. - Press the PATCH button to call up edit selections 21 DELETE, etc. - Use the Alpha-dial to select the sample number you want to edit - Press the F3 button to COPY - Choose the SOURCE & DESTINATION sample numbers - Press the PAGE+ button to SET the sample mode - Use the Alpha-dial to change the Mode to REVERSE - Press the SHIFT button then press the ENTER button to Execute the Copy - Press the PATCH button to return to the Edit menu with items 11 thru 18 - Press the F4 button to select the Loop Mode - Use the Alpha-dial to choose FWD loop - The new sample now plays back in a continuous looping reverse pattern - You may need to adjust the envelopes for continuous playback If there is an easier way to emulate this feature, lemme know. I could sure use a shortcut if there is one. I was looking for a replacement for my S-330 sampler. I like the S-330 but I was looking for something with more storage, memory, and stereo capabilities. I looked into the S-750 and S-770 but decided they were a bit pricey for my tastes and the sample libraries were equally expensive (although very nice). I looked into the Ensoniq ASR-10 rackmount but was not particularly thrilled with the editing functions (what can I say, editing using the Roland screen interface spoiled me) and transferring my S-330 samples was not going to be easy. I also looked into the Kurzweil K2000R but I was not pleased with the general dullness of the sound quality (it also only reads S-750 and S-770 samples, not S-330 or S-550). The SampleCell II is a Mac Nubus card with 8 outputs, 32 voices, and can hold up to 32 MB of Mac SIMM memory (8x4MB slots). So far, I am pleased with the card but there are some things that others might not like. It is a "Sample Playback" card, in other words, it does not have any way to record samples. To record samples, you need an AudioMedia or SoundTools card. This was not a problem for me since I have SoundTools. [SoundTools comes with SoundDesigner II which can edit, send, and receive samples from most samplers. I have been using SoundDesigner to download all my S-330 samples.] [SoundTools and AudioMedia can also be used with Digital Performer, Cubase Audio, or StudioVision to record digital audio with sequences. Cool stuff!] The interface to the SampleCell II card is very intuitive. The main screen looks like a mixer (a "bank") with a channel strip for every "instrument" you have loaded onto the card. Instruments consist of samples spread out over key and velocity ranges on a single MIDI channel. In other words, instruments correspond to Roland patches and samples correspond to Roland tones. An instrument has 3 envelopes, matrix modulation routings, and a filter (there are more goodies but I can't remember them all at the moment). Instruments remember where their samples are loaded from and banks remember where their instruments are loaded from so it is easy to save your work in various increments. The filtering on the SampleCell II card is nothing to get excited about. It is just a simple lowpass filter and has no resonance parameter. If you do a lot of filter effects with your samples, then this is not the best card for the job. Sample parameters can be adjusted in the editor, sample start point, loop points, forward or reverse sample playback, etc. If you want to tweak the sample further, you have to go into SoundDesigner (a special stripped down verison is included with SampleCell but you can use the standard version too). That's OK since double clicking on the sample brings up SoundDesigner. Exiting SoundDesigner updates the sample in the card. This gives you some very powerful tools for manipulating samples! The differences between the SampleCell I and SampleCell II cards: - 32 voices vs. 16 voices - filters - faster sample loading time. The SampleCell II card has the same list price as the old SampleCell I card ($1995). However, there are some great deals on the old SampleCell I cards out there. The big benefit of the SampleCell II system is that it comes with 2 CD-ROMs full of samples (can you believe a set of Bosendorfer piano samples that use 16-32MB of memory!). If you send in your registration card, you also get a 3rd CD-ROM of sound FX samples. I just got mine and I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. You will not get the most out of a SampleCell system unless you have a CD-ROM drive. Loading samples from the CD-ROM is pretty speedy but not as fast as off a harddisk. Loading all 32MB of memory from the CD-ROM is about as fast as loading 2 banks of an S-550 from floppies. So, if you do primarily studio work, don't mind having your Mac on whenever you want to play your sampler, have a CD-ROM drive, have a DigiDesign audio input card, and don't use lots of filter effects on your sampler, the SampleCell system is the best thing you can get. As I said, I don't think it is for everyone but for the right situation, it can't be beat. The sample editing, easy of use, convenience, and speed is tremendous. I have been reading the sgroup e-mail archives from the ftp site and have found many interesting things. I have an S-550 sampler and am quite experienced with the machine. I would like to know if anyone out there has any more "tekkie" Midi sysex source code for the S-550 other than what was on the ftp site. I have found what is the basic equivalent of samdisk for the Emu Emax and an ftp site for the Emax sampler. It has source code too, I would like to be able to convert sample data to Roland format. The Emax ftp site is 161.66.1.11, if anyone is interested. Also, I have the Turtle Beach Sample Vision Sample Editor software and I use it to upload and download to the S-550. Does anyone else use this with Roland Samplers ? I would like to share/exchange samples with any other Roland sampler owners. I have quite a library of techno, electronic stuff. I would like to see the sgroup sample library put on the sgroup ftp site, rather than getting them thru US Mail. If anyone has any cool electronic-sounding samples (Analog synths, drum machines) please let's exchange them. I also have a KORG Wavestation EX, Alesis Quadraverb, Yamaha CS-15 Analog, Voyetra Sequencer Plus Gold, Voyetra V24SM Midi/SMPTE Interface, SoundBlaster Pro, Yamaha RX15 drum machine, Roland/Boss DR550 drum machine, Roland CR-78 drum machine. -- --------------------------------------------------------------- David J. A friend and I *nearly* figured this out, but lost interest since I already have the Roland mouse. Here's what we know so far: For starters, you'll need a 'bus' mouse, or one for the Atari ST or Amiga, since those are parallel instead of serial like most Microsoft-type mice. >From there, it's a simple matter of figuring out pinouts, with one problem: The inputs for the Roland mouse seem to be INVERTED compared with an "ordinary mouse". My friend and I successfully controlled the S330 with an Atari mouse and a jumble of wires for a brief time, and had no problems, but I've heard of at least one story from someone who damaged the S330 by attempting to plug in a non-Roland mouse. Ever wonder why Roland has to make everything so difficult? If anyone has ever hooked a sustain pedal to a Roland keyboard, you've found that is's a normally-closed switch instead of normally-open, so only a Roland one will work... If we let the samples go public by anonymous ftp, I don't know in anyone would be encouraged to exchange a disk of original sounds for the library. We're all gonna loose in the long run. The real problem is to count on snail mail to forward the disks but I'm still in favour of restrictions in order to encourage exchanges of disks. But heh! If anyone wants to send me disks in exchange of my sounds, I'm in! :-) Marc St-Jacques (stjacque@ere.umontreal.ca) From lotus.uwaterloo.ca!sgroup-owner Sun Jul 25 20:32:05 1993 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca ([129.97.140.9]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <88150-2>; Sun, 25 Jul 1993 20:31:54 -0400 Received: from condor.CC.UMontreal.CA ([132.204.2.103]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <42>; Sun, 25 Jul 1993 20:26:28 -0400 Received: from eole.ERE.UMontreal.CA by condor.CC.UMontreal.CA with SMTP id AA18256 (5.65c/IDA-1.4.4 for sgroup@lotus.UWaterloo.ca); Sun, 25 Jul 1993 20:24:58 -0400 Received: from mistral.ERE.UMontreal.CA by eole.ERE.UMontreal.CA (920330.SGI/5.17) id AA27244; Sun, 25 Jul 93 20:24:57 -0400 Received: by mistral.ERE.UMontreal.CA (920330.SGI/5.17) id AA22732; Sun, 25 Jul 93 20:24:55 -0400 From: stjacque@ere.umontreal.ca (St-Jacques Marc) Message-Id: <9307260024.AA22732@mistral.ERE.UMontreal.CA> Subject: Repenting? This program converts sample data files from SUN, IBM-PC, DEC, just about any data format you can imgine. The latest version is SOX version 7, and it even does Sample Vision .SMP files !!! I would highly recommend getting Sample Vision, because it is now only about $89 from Turtle Beach Systems. They have a bulletin board # (717) 845 4835 for free Sampler drivers, demos, utilities. You can get free programs to convert raw 8, 12, 16 bit samples into SampleVision format. You can also convert Digidesign samples into SampleVision format. I am in no way affiliated with Turtle Beach Systems, but I think it is a handy program to have for the new low price. Also the sample source code on the sgroup ftp site for reading the Roland disk and converting the 12 bit sample data into one big 8 bit sample chunk should be useful for converting and playing Roland samples on a SoundBlaster. The file SOX7DOS.tar.Z is available on most big ftp sites. -------------------------------------------------------------------- David J. I'm preparing a disk. On the meantime, get in contact with | George to see what's up. Prepare for disk dowload guys. If I'm reading this right, you're suggesting that I should track down George, and if so, I think you're misunderstanding my role here. I maintain a mailing list, and make a collection of things available for FTP, and that's about all I have time for. I don't have the time (or the inclination) to arrange to obtain a copy of the sgroup library by physical mail and then upload it all and make it available for FTP. We don't have publically writeable FTP sites here at Waterloo, because past experience has shown that that is an open invitation for every bozo on the Internet to throw junk down our already saturated Internet link. But, I'll repeat it again, I'm happy to make arrangements with just about anybody to retrieve, or make it possible for them to put, any useful additions and make them available for FTP. John jmsellens@watdragon.uwaterloo.ca P.S. The "you must submit samples in order to get samples" rule has been in place for longer than I've been around.
