Tell me what you need from the RGB monitor, and I can tell you > if it'll do it. > I took the time to figure this out about a month ago. It turns out that an IBM CGA monitor will work if you invert the horizontal and vertical sync signals. I did this with a simple 7400-series TTL inverter chip. I put it in a small box which gets connected as shown below: +-------+ +----------+ +---------+ | | | | | | | S-550 |--------->| inverter |--------->| CGA | | | | box | | monitor | +-------+ +----------+ +---------+ Power for the inverter comes from one of the pins on the S-550 digital video output. From memory, I believe the pinout diagrams for the video output in the S-550 manual are correct; I think they show the 8-pin DIN socket on the sample with positive sync signals. The pinout shown for the type of connector on the CGA monitor has negative sync signals, so I tried the inversion. People have told me that some Atari monitor works without an inverter, so I would imagine that some monitors accept non-inverted sync signals (or perhaps they can use either polarity). The Apple monitor may be that type. Anyway, this worked for me. ---------------------------------------- Graham Doig (graham@vms.ecs.rpi.edu) Sr. Systems Programmer RPI ECS, Troy, NY 12180 ---------------------------------------- From taipan.uwaterloo.ca!sgroup-owner Thu Sep 3 15:48:06 1992 Received: from taipan.uwaterloo.ca ([129.97.108.61]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <168216-3>; Thu, 3 Sep 1992 15:48:03 -0400 Received: from hercules.cs.uregina.ca ([142.3.200.90]) by taipan.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <31353>; Thu, 3 Sep 1992 15:43:41 -0400 Received: by hercules.cs.uregina.ca (5.61/1.34) id AA07442; Thu, 3 Sep 92 13:42:09 -0600 From: keeler@hercules.cs.uregina.ca (Jason Keeler) Message-Id: <9209031942.AA07442@hercules.cs.uregina.ca> Subject: Re: PA DECODER memory expansion to W30? Bill, can you fill us in? > > David Subject: Re: S-550 & RGB Monitors Sorry for taking so long to respond. Life has been very hectic since I was transferred. As a matter of fact, I may have even forgotten to inform the sgroup about my current email address. I am at att!alux2!wbf (wbf@alux2.att.com). Please make sure that I'm back on the air. PART I: For my original S-550 (currently in storage with all my studio gear until I have a house) I bought a Commodore 1084S monitor for around $350? Unfortunately, the picture rolled using the Roland RGB cable due to the S-550's inverted sync and the monitor's positive sync requirement. Through this list, I was provided this address and phone number: PBC Technical Services 11026 Washington Blvd. Culver City, CA 90230 (213) 838-6841 I bought their STV II for $99.00 (US) which I connected to the S-550's digital RGB video output. The STV converts it to composite video (NTSC) so the resolution is poorer than the digital connection normally makes. I've lived that way for years. Here's a description of the STV II: It is about 3" x 2" x 1.25", uses an external AC-DC converter, and has composite video (NTSC) AND RF outputs (2 outputs). The video out is standard phono, and the RF out is coax, like for cable TV. PBC doesn't accept plastic or personal checks (which sometimes are rubber). They designed this box expressly to go with Roland samplers because the samplers put out negative vertical sync. (Couldn't I just invert the sync pulses with a CMOS inverter and power it from the 5V pin on the Roland RGB DIN output?) Everything else PBC sells is designed elsewhere as they're basically a distributor. PART II: Now that I'm in Allentown, Pensylvania, I'm waiting on a construction loan to build a house. If all goes well, I should be able to move in this December, get my stuff out of storage, and set up my studio. In the mean time, I've been going nuts without being able to record. When I ran across a deal for an S-550 on the MMML, I jumped at it so I'd have some sequencing capability to tide me over this transfer-initiated studio dry spell. I forget the brand and model of the monitor. And it is connected via a mysterious third party cable. I emailed the previous owner and asked what he sold me but all he remembers is that the monitor was about $300 and the cable was about $50. The picture quality is much better than the composite video put out by the STV II converter. Bill Fox ----- End of forward. Somebody out there using a S-550 together with a CM-8833 monitor? If there is, can you tell me how you did connect them? I want my S-550 in color, not in B/W (which I get when using the B/W video out). I've tried different cables (made some of my own, bought an IBM-cable) but all I get is a nice, colored snowstorm, in which the characters are invisible. My closest try was a direct connection between the digital TTL-RGB out of the S-550 and the TTL-RGB in of the CM-8833. Then the screen was only distorted when the lower part contained a lot of white pixels. Please, help me if you can! (My local dealer couldn't, neither could Roland Scandinavia...) Status: R hi...i'm new to the list and i'm interested in getting into sampling. i've been playing keyboards for about 6 years now. the only keyboard i have is a Yamaha DX11. i know it's kind of old, but it has a couple cool sounds i can get out of it. anyway, i'm interested in purchasing a sampler in the near future. i don't have a lot of money, so i'm wondering what would be a good low-cost sampler to check out. i have no idea how to sample my own sounds, so i would kind of like a sampler that has a great library of sounds that i could use. (i eventually want to sample my own sounds, though.) i really need a good piano sample too. i know that Ensoniq has that special piano sample chip that i've heard good things about.also, i know that investing in a sampler costs a lot more than investing in a regular synth, but i'm really interested in sampling capabilities. i would be using the sampler alot in live performance, so that might make things different.i would also need a sampler with keys. and i really want to avoid MIDI as much as a can. i have never used it and frankly don't want to. i would appreciate some feedback from those of you who are more knowledgable on this list about samplers than myself. thanks. (i can hear the engineers in the audience hitting their foreheads shouting "OOF!") sure enough, the thing powered up and worked fine. Which lasted about three minutes. Then it immediately shut off again and now it won't go back on, blow to the head and all. No authorised roland dealer here in st. louis to my knowledge, and i don't know what to do. i opened it up and looked for an obvious short or broken connection problem (no voltmeter handy) and couldn't find any. Does anyone have any ideas? More importantly, does anyone know how i go about getting it fixed by roland? does anyone have their US phone number? it's not under warranty, and i know it won't be cheap, but i'd love it if i could avoid having to spend more than $100+ getting it fixed. Any advice? Advice, Roland service centre or company number or whatever would be forever appreciated.
