I realize that someone was talking > about SamDisk, but I'm talking specifically about Macs here. > > Ray MacNeil > Halifax, Nova Scotia > Canada There is a utility for the Mac called DART. It can read a Roland sample disk and save the entire thing as one file, I think 720k. This binary file can then been sent binhex and using DART on the receiving end of the Mac place the thing back on to a new floppy disk which the Roland sampler can read. Now, *IF* someone could adapted the SAMDISK utility to read/write the format of a MAC DART file then that would be great. Or someone could adapted the entire SAMDISK to work on the MAC like it does on other machines. I'd really like to have something for the Mac since this is what I use. I also don't have access to FTP so split binhex files is the way I'd had to go. If I remember correctly, I had to have HSYNC connected and NOT VSYNC. I suggest wiring a DB-9/DB-9 adaptor, jumper all of the pins straight through, then disconnect/reconnect jumpers till you get a stable picture. The pin-out for the S-550 is on page 12 of the manual. Some very basic guidelines: 1. disks sent and received should not contain Roland library samples unless seriously (and usefully) deranged to the point of non-recognition. 2. Every disk you send should be FORMATTED (I have both S-50 and S-330/S-550) and labeled. Unformatted disks will likely be returned empty and unformatted. Make sure you make note what machine they are formatted for. 3. Access to the S-library depends on your participation alone. A single contribution in earnest to the library will get you access to the entire library. Think of your contribution as the initiation fee. From then on, you can request any disks in the library. Please limit to 10 disks each mailing. 4. For the most part, I'm not going to spend a lot of time looping these samples because of the time involved. Nor will I do much vel-fades or splits or whatever. Expect tones, not patches. 5. Return addressed postage (you know, SASE) is mandatory. I need stamped addressed envelopes or I'll wait until you send them. Sorry, no exceptions. The SASE should also have YOUR address as the return address. For people in countries outside the US who send money for posting: this does not exempt you from supplying a self-addressed envelope. Also, payment for postage should be in US currency. 8. For those of you who just want disks for nothing: if you send formatted disks, I'll send something back: WHEN TIME ALLOWS. It could be weeks, it could be months: no promises. Folks that send sounds: I'll do my best for a week turnaround. 9. Use your imagination. Nobody wants 20 samples from Star Trek no matter how cute they are. We're making music, not video games :-). 10. My NEW Address: George Demarest 1165 Hillside Avenue Plainfield, NJ 07060 (908) 522-6363 (weekdays) 11. Sample everything! I especially like synth stuff, samples for House-type stuff, drum samples, noises. 12. Please, sample all sounds at 30K sampling rate (unless you intentionally wish to have a real nasty sound - NEIL!!!!). There really is a difference! 13. Send me e-mail describing what and when you are sending me. Please do this before you send it out. I read mail every day and respond immediately to anything I get. 14. Include a list of sounds that you have already gotten from me if applicable. This will eliminate the possibility of you getting the same stuff more than once. 15. Please refrain from sending samples that you have bought from someone else. Not that I'm afraid of getting sued, more so that it's not fair to them. Do your own sampling! 16. Samples can be sent on DAT tape. I have DAT and an easy way of getting DAT data down to the samplers. Of course, don't send 60 minutes worth of samples on DAT, but if there is a stereo sample that you think is exceptional, send it on DAT. All tapes will be returned intact unless otherwise requested. 17. DO NOT send originals. Send me copies of your sounds. You never know what you may get back! :-) =========================== Bonus Request ==================================== Eric C. did me the courtesy of actually printing the names of the disks he wanted on his pre-formatted disk labels. This makes it very clear and very easy for me to know exactly what you want. I wont demand this from all you jokers out there, but, it did speed up the process. A+ for Eric! I have written a utility that will read Roland diskettes by the mac and make disk images that are exactly like those that SamDisk makes for easy netexchange. It will also take tose images and write them onto diskettes that the sampler reads. It will also let you take the individual tones of the diskimages, ( this applies only for 12-bit samplers ) and store those tones as files many sound editing tools on the Mac understands. ( Formats thus far are Sound Designer 1 & II, and Audio AIFF ) I want to go the other way also i.e put individual tones into the disk image. I will see about that tomorrow. I have some cataloguing functions but those are not worth mention. ( ooops ) Anyone that want to have the program is of course welcome to. Isn't the samdisk image just a one to one copy of the Roland disk? And the protection against corruption of data comes from the unix compression when transferring samples over net? But it appears to me that it is little reason for doing the translation you want. If you have to do something anyhow, then really nothing seems easier than making the samdisk image directly by reading the roland disk and the other way around by a single program. Compression on the mac if needed can then be done with any of the common mac compressors. If you want to know how to write code to read a Roland diskette, come on over ( The point is for doing what you suggested you have to open a file anyhow, It doesnt take more lines ( but not the same ) to open a roland diskette than others, etc. ) Mac disk copy image has a small header and checksums of data and tags in addition to the raw image? The Dart utility also compresses. ..BTW I wrote a program for the mac which extracts the samples (= Tone data ) from the image files and saves them in a DigiDesign sound format, so I can send them over MIDI/SCSI to my EPS. ---------- --------- Terje G. If someone has that already going on a MAC, all you're missing is the label/database generating capabilities of Samdisk. BTW- I've recently tweaked SAMDISK so that it can get a directory of a flat file image as well as that of a disk. I don't have a C compiler on my Mac (nor do I want one! :-) ) so I will have to hope that someone else does it. By global demand; here it is, the superb original Roland-disk headerfile. PS! Has anyone written any program to defragmentate disks? Why not make a program that transform the contents into two samples in bank A and B, and the rest into sub-tones? It shouldn`t be that hard, but`s proabably a lot of work. -Thomas :-> #ifndef RS12_H #define RS12_H /************************************************************************/ /* NAME */ /* rs12.h */ /* DESCRIPTION */ /* Roland 12-bit-sampler disk format for the S-550, S-330, etc.). */ /* AUTHOR */ /* Copyright 1992 by Gary J. Terje! Are you planning to post this utility to the sgroup? I would be very interested in seeing this since I was planning to do exactly what you have already done - I am using the Digidesign boards (Audiomedia and SampleCell) as well as an EPS, so your program could save me a lot of time trying to convert all of the Roland image files. BTW, are you using MIDI or SCSI to upload/download samples to the EPS? I am assuming you are using SDII since you mentioned Digi. Thanks, Mark Loomis loomis@eng.sun.com
