Pete -- Date: Wed, 8 Jan 92 09:33:15 -0800 >From: pete%WLBR@WLV.IMSD.CONTEL.COM (Pete Lyall) To: sgroup+@andrew.cmu.edu This is a tool for owners of Roland S330, S50, and S550 samplers that I whipped up over the holidays. It allows reading the sampler disks into dos files (and the reverse), listing patch and tone contents, duplicator mode, and also a binary record writing mode for use with your own data manipulation routines. Now we can exchange sampler DISKS over traditional telecommunications media! Enjoy... Pete Lyall P.S. Source has already been mailed to at least 1 each of the ST, Amiga, and MAC camps. Hopefully they'll post their versions as well. ========================== Cut Here ========================= begin 640 samdisk.zip M4$L#!`H````&`"J@(ABN=*Q))RH``(9&```+````4T%-1$E32RY%6$4/`!(# M)!4V)S@Y:GM,G6X?"08!$S3E]I;WFVHU#)`D0(D`00*4&_#_?]D%`5V3(H8] M(,#](.6J*2[YNP6&YTQ@^/D#AE\H8/B7"89?BV!X`L-N]\#PX0T,?VK8.0Q[ MX`;#/QEVY@R&][I@^(L*AB_IX`R`_PL&_*+NKP-=)K:(/R!MF,U#+G:A^2_V MR!*@8^VC)0-D;!`RP,0>&0WODC7`XP8M`^"\T=,,2-RGHO"/+\:>^_]?DX%[ MXKQ9-Z/)Q54%`M;?LRY$P.:__S-WP/ZSUB6`K/)=CP\[U"3.@G6M`VX.^'[V MQ`[RSZ6X3Q\_>#C"P>/Q9;VCL->^4OUBGPX3!OX/4.#<@[^(3\2LQV&6E(MR MH$^&">6*C$UP^ONC.]_+S3@(VP'2/6!<]0#K.D@?`O5W#R[NOWY@^I`!%W\? They said yes, 1.13 is it. Would you like a copy? How would you like to pay for it? Being caught off guard, I (stupidly) gave the guy my Visa number and figured it was maybe 5 bucks + postage, you know, to cover the cost of the disk. Well, about two days later (very fast, I must say), I get a 10"x6"x4" box from - guess who? Yes, the disk! A little disk had to be put in a box like that. Well, maybe they were out of envelopes. After emptying out 98% of the contents (foam peanuts), I find one (1) Roland 1.13 Utilities disk. Oh boy! Let's boot! about 30 sec. later, yes, it works, and guess what? It's not the hard disk version! Great! Just about use- less (well, not really, but). Anyway, by now I decide to look at the receipt and see how much this gem has set me back. 25 bucks!!! No, add 5 bucks more for the box. 30 bucks for bug fixes. Gotta hand it to Roland for making the most out of their mistakes. Well, they're not the only ones who charge for an O.S. update, OR ?? So, was I a dope ? Should I have called around to dealers? No, none in my area that carry Roland Samplers, except Guitar Center. And I know they don't have that O.S. disk. But what about you all? Did anyone already have that disk, and would have sent me a copy? Well, in case the answer is no, that is, noone has a copy, I will make mine available to anyone who wants it. Just send me a stamped self- addressed envelope w/a floppy in it, and I'll send you out the O.S. Address is: Peter Delevoryas 2368 Patricia Dr. Santa Clara, CA 95050 Thanks for listening to my sweet/sour grapes story. When I called them to complain about missing info in my doc. set for my 4030 tape synchronizer (which I had bought that week and was shipped from CA) first they insisted that the unit couldn't talk to my computer. The salemsan said it could. I called the salesman back who apologized and said that they must have been mistaken. I checked the doc I had again and it said that it would talk to my computer. I called them again and they told me that yes, it did, but only for certain special things. I called them again and asked for the doc that was referenced in my manual but wasn't in my spiral-bound book. they sent a package to my house COD for $26 that turned out to be the same doc I had before. I had already gotten shafted twice by the place I ordered the thing through (they didn't tell me until the unit came in and that it didn't come with the special cables, which were $100/set and I needed two - one for each deck). They also told me that the unit would generate as well as read SMPTE. Wrong. I had to buy another box to do that as well. So by the time the COD manual hit I was pretty pissed. I called and told them that sales, marketing, and tech support had all been useless and I wanted to talk to someone who could help me. They put me through to the general manager, and I finally got my questions answered: 1. Yes, it will talk to the computer. 2. You might need a new software rev. They normally charged $80 for the software rev (but I just bought this unit?). They ultimately offered me the upgrade for free to make up for the trouble. As it turned out, I didn't need it (the OS in my synchronizer was recent enough). They also agreed to send me the other doc for free, though normally that's $15. They also refunded the $26 when I sent the other manual back. To Fostex's credit, ultimately it seemed that they were just lame, and when push came to shove they tried hard to make me happy. If they had known more about their own products in the first place and been a bit more careful upfront the whole mess could have been avoided. larry... -- >From: Wilfried van Sark Subject: W30 O.S. version To: sgroup+@andrew.cmu.edu Date: Fri, 10 Jan 92 22:17:43 MET Ijust checked my O.S. version of the W30, it is v1.06. I would like to be able to merge patches with tones to different disks without having to re-assign them myself. Hey!!! Could the SAMDISK be used for this application? Select an option, place in the S-330 disk and say which you want to copy. It sucks it up into memory/hard disk of the computer and then you put in your next disk and do the same. Then place in the formatted S-330 disk to write at the whole thing as one disk! David -- Date: Sun, 12 Jan 92 11:36:12 CST >From: Jason Keeler Subject: What's up?? Welcome to some new group members ("You! In the corner...stand up!"). Things have been quiet here. People working on making my job obsolete. A note to those folks that may wish to get samples on line due to some nifty new stuff out there from Pete Lyall, among others: As good as the idea sounds, I wont be able to supply sample disks over the net. The most basic reason is that I would probably get fired if I were to mail a bunch or 1.4 megabyte files over the net every night. If someone at another installation could get away with this, more power to them. I will admit that I haven't been such a boffo librarian anyway. Ah well. Anyway, things are relatively together now in the library. Mac users will be interedted in knowing that there exists a tool that will copy S-sampler disks on the mac. This was given to me by D. Roth from the group. It is a very helpful tool for me (ie disk copies can be done on any macintosh and my mac driver is a lot faster than the Roland. The tool is called DART. I believe David got it off of some ftp site from a group of Mac utilities supplied by Apple. Well, here is the current list of samples. My mailbox has been desperately quiet from you folks out there. Perhaps the guidelines will cheer you up. Please do me the courtesy of reading these before you even think about sending disks. It's all very simple. ======================Obtaining Samples from The S-Group===================== (revised 1/13/92) OK, here we go. Some very basic guidelines: 1. disks sent and received should not contain Roland library samples unless seriously (and usefully) deranged to the point of non-recognition. 2. Every disk you send should be FORMATTED (I have both S-50 and S-330/S-550) and labeled. Unformatted disks will likely be returned empty and unformatted. Make sure you make note what machine they are formatted for. 3. Access to the S-library depends on your participation alone. A single contribution in earnest to the library will get you access to the entire library. Think of your contribution as the initiation fee. From then on, you can request any disks in the library. Please limit to 10 disks each mailing. 4. I had originally thought of limiting my activities to drum samples but I think I'll do whatever. I'm not particularly interested in acoustic instrument samples (get a proteus) unless they are unusual or extremely good. However, no samples of better than marginal quality will be rejected regardless of subject matter. --ed I have yet to reject any samples. 5. For the most part, I'm not going to spend a lot of time looping these samples because of the time involved. Nor will I do much vel-fades or splits or whatever. Expect tones, not patches. 6. Return addressed postage (you know, SASE) is mandatory. I need stamped addressed envelopes or I'll wait until you send them. Sorry, no exceptions. The SASE should also have YOUR address as the return address. For people in countries outside the US who send money for posting: this does not exempt you from supplying a self-addressed envelope. Also, payment for postage should be in US currency. 7. For those of you who just want disks for nothing: if you send formatted disks, I'll send something back: WHEN TIME ALLOWS. It could be weeks, it could be months: no promises. Folks that send sounds: I'll do my best for a week turnaround. 8. Use your imagination. Nobody wants 20 samples from Star Trek no matter how cute they are. We're making music, not video games :-). 9. My Address: George Demarest 110 East Fairview Avenue South Plainfield, NJ 07080 (908) 52206363 (weekdays) 10. Sample everything! I especially like synth stuff, samples for House-type stuff, drum samples, noises. 11. Please, sample all sounds at 30K sampling rate (unless you intentionally wish to have a real nasty sound - NEIL!!!!). There really is a difference! 12. Send me e-mail describing what and when you are sending me. Please do this before you send it out. I read mail every day and respond immediately to anything I get. 13. Include a list of sounds that you have already gotten from me if applicable. This will eliminate the possibility of you getting the same stuff more than once. 14. Please refrain from sending samples that you have bought from someone else. Not that I'm afraid of getting sued, more so that it's not fair to them. Do your own sampling! 15. Samples can be sent on DAT tape. I have DAT and an easy way of getting DAT data down to the samplers. Of course, don't send 60 minutes worth of samples on DAT, but if there is a stereo sample that you think is exceptional, send it on DAT. All tapes will be returned intact unless otherwise requested. 16. DO NOT send originals. Send me copies of your sounds. You never know what you may get back! :-) =========================== Bonus Request ==================================== Eric C. did me the courtesy of actually printing the names of the disks he wanted on his pre-formatted disk labels. This makes it very clear and very easy for me to know exactly what you want. I wont demand this from all you jokers out there, but, it did speed up the process. A+ for Eric! =========================== Bogus Request ==================================== Someone else included a note that said, among other things, "I hope I have included enough postage...". People who don't send enough postage will receive melted disks. =========================== Disclaimer Request =============================== If you find that these guidelines are a pain, let me suggest that you take over this job from me. I don't covet this task and will do it only as long as people don't abuse the service/my time. I'm a musician, not a librarian: if people don't take the time to do this thing right, I'm outa here. 'nuff said. gfd -- >From: gfd@usl.usl.com Date: Mon, 13 Jan 92 15:12 EST To: att!andrew.cmu.edu!Sgroup+@usl.usl.com Subject: some sampling ideas! Sample-Heads: Below is a note that I sent around about a year ago in response to someone asking what they should sample. Check it out. It may stir some of your innards. gfd ============================================================================== Here they are: 10 quick sampling ideas (beyond getting the M1 and DW-8000 sounds (I personally would love some of the classic DW-8000 brass, strings and clav-type sounds)) 1. Take a synth sound that will sustain. Jam the sustain pedal to get an infinite sound. Put your sampler 3 rooms away and run a garden hose from the speaker to the sampler room (where there is a mic). SAMPLE IT. 2. Get a coffee can (empty, half-full, half full with water, jello) close mic it, send output to a chorus, delay or gated reverb. Sample outout of effect when you strike the plastic lid. 3. Get an old, old record player (with an indestructible stylus). Take output and put it into a guitar amp. Lift the needle 3 inches. DROP. Let bounce, scrape, kneed, cool on rack and add herbs. mic output of guitar amp. Works well with chipmunk records slowed down so you can tell that Alvin is played by Merv Griffin. SAMPLE IT. 4. Turn on your television to a basketball game. mic the TV speaker and attempt to isolate sneaker noise on gym floor. Put it through any effect you may have. Nike's seem to squeak a lot. 5. Play as many octaves and 5th of a single tone on both of your synths. Have both sustain indefinitely. Put the output speaker (good, or cheap) in your garage. Turn it up loud. Place the mic 10 feet from the speaker in a metal pail. SAMPLE IT. 6. Have a friend (preferably naked) in the next room. Put a mic very close the adjoining wall and have your friend hit the wall with various parts of his/her body. SAMPLE IT. 7. Borrow a portable cassette (a poor quality micro-cassette could be ideal) and close mic any sustained or percussive sound (motor running, fog horn, someone taking a hammer to a dead fish, etc). SAMPLE IT. 8. Take a synth and put it through a long reverb. Set the reverb so that its output is 100% effect (ie no original signal). Sample that. Short and long. 9. Take a wooden ruler, place it on a desk so that a good 8 inches hang off the edge, apply pressure downward on the part over the desk and with the other hand, pluck the other end (note: this was done with great effect on one of the Art of Noise albums. None the worse for already having been done). 10. Bring your sampler to work. Put a mic near the top of your desk. Pound on your desk with your fist until someone comes in and screams. Sample the fist AND the screams. 11. You get the idea. Zillions of sounds out there to be found, taken and used. Never discount the idea of using outboard effects as part of the sample itself. Then using a utility like 'split' on UNIX you could split the disk into 32K chuck e-mail messages. That is the lowest common size of mail message I have seen suggested for most network connection. Some won't allow messages over 100k in an e-mail message anyway. I think if the messages were 32K (or even less) per e-mail message than I don't think anyone would complain. I don't have access to FTP but it would be great if someone had an archive to keep these things on. I guess my feeling is that we just try it out with the disks broken up into small 32k chucks and just see what happens? If there can be binary and source newsgroups, why not one for Roland samples? What if I first used samdisk to save the contents of a blank S-50 disk onto a file, and then saved the contents of a S-50 disk with a couple of samples on. Then I could find the differences between the to files, save the differencies on a file and e-mail it. Off course you could also e-mail other thing's like S-553 songs or W-30 patches or whatever. There is allready a standard UNIX program that does the job, cmp, but it would be better if someone wrote a dedicated program for it. We just have to find an efficient file format which also have to include what kind of disk it have to be written on, and some sort of info about it's contents. I have to admit that I'm a very poor C programmer, but I would gladely assist if anyone would do it. Well, I'm not sure what your question is, but let me guess. I would envision two methods of getting samples from the Sample-Site-Of-The-Future to your sampler. The first step has lots of options but basically amounts in a binary file containing the sample data plus some other stuff landing on your own computer. From there you can either 1) use your computer to write the correct format onto a disk that can be loaded by your Roland sampler. 2) use your computer to read the sample and send it via System Exclusive to your Roland sampler. If you are like me, you are stuck with the second method since my Roland disks (2.8") will not even go into my computer. Hope this answers your question. By the way, our mailer is on the fritz, so if you send something to me and don't get a response, try again or try dlaw@gould.encore.com. --Don Law dlaw@encore.com ...!uunet!gould!dlaw --Ada Development, MS404 --Encore Computer Corporation ***** In the computer lab, ***** --Ft. What specific program do you use to do this? I guess what I really getting at is, where can I find specific information on System Exclusive messages. I've got a NeXT and program it well, but alas, I don't know a whole lot about MIDI (protocal, I understand the hardware involved). I was hoping to be able to use Cakewalk for this, but it can't handle a SysEx larger than 64K. :-( Dumping only one bank of my S-10 takes about 75K. I plan to write a program to do this. I'll write it in C and give it away if I ever get it to work. I've been planning to do this for months, so don't expect it anytime real soon. If we decide to use my computer for Sample Central, the Sample-Site-of-the-Future, then I guess this would be extra motivation for me, having all those samples just sitting there! --Don Law dlaw@encore.com ...!uunet!gould!dlaw --Ada Development, MS404 --Encore Computer Corporation ***** In the computer lab, ***** --Ft. He used to have a n MKS-100 (!) now he's got an EPS 16+ although he did the last Australian tour with an S-330 (which is why he's got an EPS now - all the other bands, Boxcar, Single Gun Theory, Paul Mac from the Lab (who is the other S.H. keyboard player ) have them). There's a mailing list, too - adolph-a-carrot, address unknown (ask in rec.musi c.industrial of course), it does double duty as a Residents list too I think. I 'm not sure, as I don't subscribe to it. Got a nice surprise the other day - my band got a mention in his latest booklet .
