Scot Art asked something about W-30 (is Roland still manufacturing it) or something. I'm not sure about that, but here in Finland W-30 is very rare. I haven't seen any Roland samplers on sale here in Finland for a while (I wonder why) ? I haven't heard anything about any expansions for W-30 either, but I'm interested in getting more information if there is any expansions or software-updates.... And now a little announcement for group: I'm selling my W-30, because it does not fill my demands (I need atleast 8 megs sample-RAM and 40000 note capacity sequencer and Midi-sample-dump-option and xfade-looping etc.). So if anyone is interested in buying it from me the prise is $1700 and it includes: W-30, 62 disks of samples, 2 sample-cd from Masterbits (over 1300 samples). I'm selling all these things together. If you are interested, please hurry I've got a friend who is going to buy it (it's his 2.nd W-30 and he also owns a S-50....). He is going to buy it on Wednesday (23. 10. 1991) if you are not interested. -Henry (hak@jyu.fi) -- Date: Sun, 20 Oct 1991 15:12:18 -0400 (EDT) >From: Neil Anthony Herzinger To: Sgroup Subject: Re: w-30? >Also, are there any third party expansion products for it? I checked over the 3rd party list I keep and didn't find anything for the W30. Of course, that doesn't mean there isn't anything. I haven't updated the list since march, so I guess that would be a good project. For anyone unfamiliar with the 3rd party list, it lists samples and hardware additions for all the Roland samplers. I put it together from Keyboard magazine classifieds and the roland users group mag. I'll post it again once I update it. neil -- >From: Thomas Flemming Date: Sun, 20 Oct 1991 20:34:58 +0100 To: nh0n+@andrew.cmu.edu Cc: sgroup+@andrew.cmu.edu Subject: Re: w-30? It is placed on top of the W30 motherboard, and allows you to add 8 Mbytes to your system. I think it is sold by PA (de)coder ? (sorry, I recall this from memory). The board costs about $ 600 (without memory). Adding megabytes costs $ 300 per Mb. (please do not oin me down on prices). The board itself shoulb be built in your W30 by an official representative of Roland, otherwise you will lose your waranty. That either means either: 1) They're so good the owners don't want to part with them. :-), or 2) No-one bought them. Only ever having seen one on a shop floor once, I think it may be a case of 2). A hard disk might actually be useful ... as long as I don't have to buy Rolands (inflated price). Of course my S-330 cannot ever have a hard disk, so maybe it might be useful to have one attached to the W-30 for faster loading ... (see below). > I heard though some rumours a year and half ago that > some US guy was trying to make a 3rd party system- > disk wich made it possible to use ordinary harddisks. "Ordinary" hard disks? As in RLL / MFM ones? You can get SCSI controllers which take an RLL disk ... some Atari STs use them (including Atari's own disks). > Rather pity that such minor details as software > upgrade's and memory expandability should make such > great instrument obsolete. It's proabably because > Roland didn't want the W-30 to compete with their then > forthcoming S-770. Yes, often it seems to Roland's way of doing things. Memory expandability is not a huge issue: I should have explained what I intend it *for* ... Like I said, I have an S-330. I also play in a band, an almost completely electronic band, two keyboards and vocals. At the moment I use a JX-8P for keys and also an Octopad and R-8 for percussion. The other keyboard player gets all the fun with the samples 'cos he's got an EPS. I hate having to take the S-330 out on the road, so generally I don't. We also used an MC-500 ... for a while. We got sick of lugging rackfuls of gear around only to have things freak out and decided that the best thing would be to go back to backing tape... after all, it makes no difference to the audience. However, I'd like to explore the possibilities of doing stuff controlling the timbre and expression of sounds in the Oberheim Matrix 6R (perfect for that sort of stuff), I need the MC-500 back to send the notes... Anyway, to cut it short, the W-30 gives me both the MC-500 and doubles my sample capability. Plus it gives me an OK mother keyboard (the JX-8P being borrowed, one day I'll have to give it back). Oh well ... thanks for your comments. ciao, Scot scot.art@f909.n712.z3.fidonet.org PS I have lots of samples for my S-330, from the mundane thru the interesting to the outright bizarre, if anyone is interested. I can swap in either S-330 format, or preferably, Sound Designer format (that way I can compress them). S-330s can load S-550 and S-50 samples no problems. -- uucp: uunet!m2xenix!puddle!3!712!909!Scot.Art Internet: Scot.Art@f909.n712.z3.fidonet.org -- Date: Tue, 22 Oct 91 18:28:00 PDT >From: Scot.Art@f909.n712.z3.fidonet.org (Scot Art) Subject: hard disk recording system? Meant to retail for about A$18000 for the basic system. Which is cheap, comparatively. I forget the model designation. Looks like a nice unit, if you can afford it. Like most things of this nature, the one to get is the next model. It'll do more, and cost less. :-) ciao -- uucp: uunet!m2xenix!puddle!3!712!909!Scot.Art Internet: Scot.Art@f909.n712.z3.fidonet.org
