Do the files that work work consistently, or is just random which files works at any particular time? The S-10 sysex uses a handshaking protocol, and if the sender (SysEx Librarian) is just dumping data without waiting for the acknowledgements from the S-10, I think it is possible that some files would fluke it through and others would fail. I'm not familiar with SysEx Librarian, so I don't know if it understands the S-10's handshaking protocol. Actually, the S-760 I'm expecting tomorrow will be my first sampler! I'm a lifelong drummer, adopting MIDI (Roland TD-8) for the neighbors' sake. Trying to teach myself, and I'm coming along but have a few questions: 1. Is there a way to search the entire Sgroup archives specifically for "760" pertinent entries? 2. Could anyone offer a link to a straightforward (read, "simpleton") tutorial for System Exclusive & Bulk Dump commands? Basically, I have a firewire interface on my notebook (with Sonar 2.2) and I'm hoping to get this whole mess connected & cooperating! But I don't really know how to do it. I'm really looking forward to delving into this new toy - I'm sure you'll be hearing more from me. thanks in advance, and kudos on the community. declan halpin new bedford, ma ===== www.declanhalpin.com * Online Gallery * News * Links * __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Interestingly these files do work with S10 Manager on the PC and if I load them into the S10 from S10 Manager and then save from the S10 into S10 Manager these files work with Sysex Librarian on the Mac. All that loading and saving is a bit time consuming though and as the PC is in a different room to the S10 I would like to get it all running from my Mac if possible. I remember that you had to set your S-10 to the right mode (A,B,C,...,AB/CD, etc. etc.) according to how the sample/sysex is saved BEFORE transmitting the sysex. There was some kind of utility with which you could check the sysex file for the actual setup, but I cannot remember what the utility was called. What a blast. This is my first sampler, so every little thing is mind-blowing. Some questions are coming into focus for me, though: **first - my setup is Roland TD-8 drum brain, Yamaha QX-5 sequencer (oldie goldie), M-Audio Firewire Audiophile, Sonar 2.2, Wavelab (both on 2.8ghz, XP Pro laptop) 1). HUM! noticeable hum (buzz) when i connect my s-760 into my system (which, by the way, is coming out a crappy PA system). There is no buzz if I use any other instruments, just the S-760. I read in another thread that it could be grounding issues... yes/no? any potential solutions? 2). S/PDIF Does the S-760's "digital out" correspond to my interface's "S/PDIF in"? And should this be a standard RCA cable? 3). SCSI I won't bore everyone with the same old questions, but has anyone tried a SCSI - USB adapter? that would be great to be able to use my recording laptop to also store S-760 libraries. My main problem at the moment is the buzz. it isn't present in the headphone mix, but only main busses. tx for the help and great reading throughout the site. -declan new bedford, ma ===== www.declanhalpin.com * Online Gallery * News * Links * __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? No, I haven't tried it, but I do know that the S-760 only supports its own file system, and does not recognise/interoperate with PC formatted disks (I am using the term PC to cover both Macs and Wintel personal computers). Also, the S-760's SCSI implementation is quirky, to say the least, so SCSI transfers directly between the sampler and a Windows PC are pretty much unviable, thought there is MacOS software (e.g. DSoundPro) that can do this. S/PDIF Does the S-760's "digital out" correspond => > to my interface's "S/PDIF in"? And should this be a => > standard RCA cable? => => Yes and yes. Some people may mutter about needing a higher => quality cable, but standard RCA cables have always worked for me. One way to counteract the hum problem would be to use the spdif out into the audiophile and the audiophile's analogue out to the PA. Might get better results with that? Make sure you clock the audiophile to the incoming spdif signal though, otherwise you'll get clicks and pops. Oh, and mutter, mutter - do use a 75ohm spdif cable and not a standard RCA cable. It might work OK (for very short distances) but you will reduce clock jitter/error using the correct cable. Of course, you may not be able to hear the difference anyway (drum sounds may not be quite so critical) - but there will be a difference! On the other hand, I don't (personally) advocate those expensive monster type cables. Just a reasonable quality 75ohm will be fine. Obviously a standard RCA will be fine for verifying whether you can use the spdif solution to defeat your hum problem quickly. You'll get a better signal for your recording rig too going digital. Finally in terms of general hum. I believe the outputs of the S760 are unbalanced, so grounding is important. Make sure that the S760's ground pin is grounded to the same earth as the PA. You could also make sure that the S750's output is as high as possible while trimming at the PA side of things. Of course the S760 could simply be faulty in terms of internal grounding of the outputs. ;-( There's lots of things you can check for dealing with hum. A little hard to cover in an email, but there must be loads of hum tracking resources in the 'net. Hope that helps. Help!
I have a Roland S50= sampler keyboard that has been in storage and not used for a= while. I am desperate
to get all of my songs= off the director-S disks onto my PC so I can put them in general= MIDI format.
But......
I tried to boot th S50= yesterday and it wont boot up - all it says is "Please= insert an S50 disk" and the disk
drive operates then stops= with the same message. I tried all of my S50V2 operating disks= with no luck -
just the same= message.
Does anyone know what= could be causing this problem?  The disk drive or the disks= maybe?
I also want to thank you= for this site - without it I would not have known about SDISK. I= have managed to
get all my samples onto= my PC, but not the director-S songs.
I am very keen the get= the S50 working again - It still is a great= Sampler!
Hope you can help= me,
David.

It is horrendously slow and error prone and AFAIK can only transfer raw sample data so you'd lose any partial/patch data. I'd look at other options, such as chickensys.com's Translator which allows you to create S7XX data, but if you don't have a floppy that could be problematic. You could write cdrom's using Translator, but you'd need a scsi cdrom connected to the sampler to read 'em. These can be had pretty cheaply these days though, although finding a S7XX suported one might require a scour of ebay. Whatever way you do it you will need to get additional hardware, I think. A floppy (or a cheap computer that has one) or a scsi cdrom drive for your sampler. I'd recommend the latter. Floppies are better than MIDI but a far cry from cdrom (or disk) as they are limited in size. Final alternative would be to get two zip drives. Try it now! You were probably doing it wrong, unless you tried it 3 years ago or something. This capability has always existed. To be sure, I downloaded Translator Free off our site, and just created a small composite CD-ROM from 3 CD's. Works great just from that. Here's the run down. Roland Preview Disk - KEY:pp YC7 1Mv/s Distorted Reality 2 - 101: Chicken Bass Legends - BS :-AL Latin 1a So what's the problem? And you know we are listening here. Be honest - I'm sure you want this to work for you. Ask us! If you are complaining about ->S-7x not being available yet, well, consider that it's a 12 year old sampler and it's fortunate that somebody is even willing to support it - that is, the 3-4 users that will buy the program because of it. Honestly, we have to work on the stuff that 2000 people want before we continue work on the 3-4 person project. That's life. We are "fed up" too! (if that's a proper phrase) with it not yet being done. We are trying as hard as possible to finish, and please look through the archives that we've said we'd keep everyone abreast. I have a simple question. I'm producing a live stage show that requires 12 to 20 sound effects. I've recorded(i.e.stored) these sound effects in sequence on a CD disc. I need to operate them independently of the music soundtrack that will be playing. And some of the sound effects need to happen instantly to match the live action that occurs on the stage. I can't wait for a CD to search, cue and play even if it only takes a second. I need to have the effects "at my fingertips". Is there a sampler that I can load the effects into and then by labelling a series of buttons, I'll have the effects I need "constantly ready"? Someone suggested a Roland JS-30 sampler for this. Does anyone agree with this idea or are there other ways to accomplish the same goal? I need a quick answer if possible. Thanks in advance for suggestions and help.
