I have the OP-760-1 option installed and use a video monitor and mouse. Part 1: Make sure the 760 and drive are off. Hook the drive to the sampler's SCSI port, but don't turn it on yet. If it's your only SCSI peripheral, make sure it's terminated. There should be a place on the drive to dial up a SCSI address. Set it to anything except the same one as the 760 (check the manual). Power up the 760. Make sure the drive is given a SCSI address in the sampler (I think you set this in the System SCSI or Utility menu) Save your System to the S760 hard disk. This is so the 760 will recognize the drive next time you turn it on and it is an important step. Shut Down the Sampler. Power up the drive. When it's stabilized, power up the sampler. Keep an eye on the screen as it boots. If the 760 won't boot past the SCSI address you've given the drive, then there may be a problem with the connection. Hopefully this won't happen and you should boot into your Performance Play screen. Part 2: Load some sounds using the floppy drive or create some. If you don't want to lose the sounds, back them up on floppy now. Select the DISK menu, select "Save", and then mark the files you want to save. Scan your drives. It should recognize the drive (it will likely say "unformatted"), then you can select it. When you select "Save" (at the bottom of the video screen if you have the OP-760-1 option card) it will say the drive is not formatted, do you want to format? Say yes. Note it will only fomat 600 MB of the 1.5 GB, this is all the S760 will use from the drive, the rest is un-useable. There is no way around this. After the formatting is completed it will save your files. Next time you select LOAD from the disk menu, it will recognize the drive and show you the files on the drive. Select the files you wish to load and they'll load 10,000 times faster than using floppies. You can also do cymbal rolls on the SPD-20. It's expensive (at least it was when I bought it) but it's very cool. Hundreds of great sounds (and some very bizarre ones) but a little dicey with a sequencer. I know there was a disk with a tymp patch though which worked in a very clever manner. Adjacent keys were assigned to the same pitch, so you could do a "2 finger" roll on eg C-C#. This also helps avoid the infamous machine gun effect from simply repeating notes which cut off the previous one. If you can't find this disk in the download section (it's an orchestral or multipatch type disk), I'll try to look for mine - it's buried in a disk case and would require serious hunting. No time right now due to work pressure..... Good pianos, e-pianos, ana/digi synths, acoustic drums, strings, horns, synth basses, etc.? And easy to setup my own multi patches for each song? I'm dumping my Roland D-110 from my rack and looking for something multi-out & multi-sound to replace it. Oh, and are there sample libraries for 760s that would feature Yamaha Motif sounds? Thanks. The Roland sampler can't handle all the instruments to do this type of thing not to mention the lack of voices. The Roland sampler is good for creating realistic instruments and sounds used as instruments, but they take a lot of memory to do this. These synths are better at creating good, not great, intruments for general play. Also, I find that it's better to have the original synths to do synth sounds than to re-create them with a sampler. Anyway, I don't think there is a CD or patch that will include a lot of general good instruments. Roland usually throws something like a sample disk with your new sampler that will fit entirely in memory but is usually a joke. I have an iOmega Zip drive which I successfully used to save a pile of patches as a performance. The other day I modified one of the patches and when I tried to save it, a few partials were saved and then the 760 Disk Save screen said "Hardware Error". I tried it a couple of times but always the same error at the same point. I also tried saving a different, unedited patch but still had hardware error. I formatted another zip disk and tried again. Same problem, Hardware Error, but at a different point on the original patch, actually earlier than it occurred with the previous disk. I can still load the sounds that I saved before this happened. But I can't seem to save anything new. Does anyone have experience with the zip drives and can tell me if it's the disks or the zip drive itself? Do these things need to have the heads cleaned? Or do I need a new one? For black&white,=20 you can make an adaptor for the SVHS jack (4 pin Mini-DIN). Much better=20= quality, but only b&w with an RCA input monitor. Does anyone have experience using sMAC to create a Roland image file then read it from the hard drive using software sampler programs? Another possibility is to use my Mac G5 to create a Roland disk somehow. Any hints from anyone? I hate to go back to saving everything on floppies. CDXtract will see S760 format disks and can convert to various sampler formats.

If you have Toast 6, or don't have Toast, you can use Translator - www.chickensys.com/translator to create one, under the Create Virtual Drive section. If you don't have Translator, use Translator Free, that does it for free. www.chickensys.com/translatorfree. You also have the luxury of seeing the contents of the drive while you're at it. Going further, Translator (and Translator Free) (Windows here) allows you to completely manage your Roland CD's, you can read and write any Roland object. so you can make compilations; for instance you can take 4-5 ZipDisks and make one compilation CD. >>....... Piqued by this question, I coded this out this AM (both PC and Mac) and is available in an update that can be had upon request (it'll be up publicly in a couple days). Translator Windows also can read S-50/550 and S-7x CD's and hard drives and convert them to most destination formats. Hmmm....I just realised that 5.2.3 doesn't work in OSX - it just doesn't see my USB Zip Drive. I am a Translator user, and I'm happy to discover this function - never used it before. I made a disk image from a 100Mb Zip disk, but it doesn't show as a virtual drive. Thanks - this is great news! When will the Mac version do everything....?
