It's very quiet out there!. 
Anyway here's a question or two that should generate a few mails hopefully
(for my sake)...

I'm currently thinking about getting an S330 to complement my other
Roland/Akai samplers as I'm into the whole 12bit lo-fi sound as some of you
know.
I was wondering what you all thought a realistic price would be for an S330
with Monitor and Mouse.

Also, has anybody heard of a memory expansion board that doubles the
internal memory to 1.5Mb for this machine??.
I have heard from a reliable source that this is the case (although he could
be getting confused with the S550).

A 'realistic' UK price (in my opinion) for an S330 including monitor and mouse is £150 tops (and that really would be pushing it because I've seen the S550 go for £200 - £225) I Bought my 330 complete with the mouse, monitor and both the user guide and operating manual for £95... 

It's a good idea to scan the Loot and also the readers ad's in Sound On Sound Magazine, sure to find a bargain come up in either of the two.


Also, has anybody heard of a memory expansion board that doubles the

I have heard from a reliable source that this is the case (although he could

I think he must have confused the details with that of another machine because there is NO mention in the S330 manual of a memory expansion option, as you probably know already, compatible monitors can be easily found with enough patience but bear in mind - if you buy an S330 without a mouse, Roland UK charge at least £65 for replacements!

I bought two S-330, two mice, one RGB monitor, one B&W monitor and one
RC-100 + manuals and the entire Roland library on floppies for UK300.
Current S-330 units are even less on eBay nowadays. But I'm not complaining.

This used to be made by a German company (the name escaped me right now)
that also did mods for the W-30. I recall hefty prices at the time and
soldering involved. In any case, the company has long gone so you would only
be able to buy a unit that already received the mods. Also, I query the
usefulness of such mod. If you need a longer sampling time, get an S-760 and
select 12bit sampling.

Personally, I find the S-330 an excellent machine for drums. As the samples
are short apart from cymbals (if you want long decay), 750k is enough to get
decent kits.

If you can't be bothered doing your own, there's a guy who sell S-330 disks
of his own making on eBay. He has around 30 disks or so including lots of
drum kits. Check 'S-330 disks'.

There has been talk of that for years, but if it did exist, it's gone now=
.

s550 has twice the memory, by adding a second bank.

s330 should just be a couple of hundred at most. You see s760's for under=

$500 these days, and that's waaaaaaaaaaay more powerful.

I never used a mouse with my s330, and never missed it. On the s760 mouse=

is pretty vital.

There's also s770s out there. Big, but very very powerful for cheap.

Built in hard drive. 16 meg of memory. 8 analog outs. Great machine.

Hey All,

I'm curious is anyone on this mailing list has any of the 60s & 70s =
keyboards CD from Roland. Are the sounds first rate? I have this great =
Rhodes sound on my Experience expansion card for the Roland XP60. The =
sound itself was derived from the 60s & 70s expansion card. With my =
recent acquisition of another expansion card, the one with the Rhodes =
sound has to be pushed to the wayside. The CD itself looks like a CD =
version of the card that I'm talking about.=20

Can anyone tell me what patches are on this CD? If it's a mirror image =
more or less of the card, I think I'll get the Vol.1/Vol.2 CD from =
Zzounds. They have it for $79.95.

i like the sounds. they are high quality - i tend to think you could =
make people believe you've got a real mellotron using these. the cds i =
owned sadly went astray one day, but i still have about 70% of the =
collection on my HD. as far as i remember you've got:

mellotron [truckloads of mellotron sounds, combos]
melodica
optigan
noises [mainly for emulating mellotron's tape noise + some vinyl =
crackle]
bass rhodes
arp strings
elka strings

a set i would strongly recommend to a prog rocker, but bear in mind that =
the selection might not cater for every producer's taste.

I cannot remember who asked me if my copy of the Philip Wolfe rock keyboards
was reading ok. I can now confirm that it does. I've not checked everything
yet but what I have sounds fine.

I can recommend that CD if you're after a B3 organ. There are 30 banks that
will probably cater for the sound you need. Most are 8Mb in size, a few will
require 16Mb.

There are also other interesting Moog banks, particularly the Taurus pedal
and classic Bass synth. The sine/saw are nothing special but are not bad
either.

All in all, a cracking buy at the current $30 on eBay.

Yes, it's a very good value, but I'd like to find out if any one else's 
copy has digital noise problems on some of the patches, as well as 
tuning problems!  Who ever heard of tuning problems on an organ patch????

So far I've found everything I need for Hammond B3 on my Roland keyboard 
CDs.  I don't regret getting this one so inexpensively but I haven't 
needed it yet.

Anybody have experience in using Passport's Alchemy to send samples to the 
S-550 via MIDI I used to be able to do this regularly, but now can't.

- Exclusive is on?: YES
- Can the Mac conttol the S-550 via MIDI?: YES
- Can your keyboard controller play the S-550? YES

Seems like all my MIDI connections are fine, so I'm stumped.

Also, the monitor is not hooked up, anyone know what keystrokes to use to 
set the sysex exclusive to ON via the sampler's front panel buttons?

Thanks to Ibo for the reply. It turns out that it was neither the S-550 or 
Alchemy that caused the problem, but I neglected to set my MIDI patchbay 
(Yamaha MJC8) to have the correct inputs/outputs selected so the S-550 and 
the Mac can talk to each other. (again, something simple I forgot after all 
this time).

Hey All,

I recently had the pleasure of fully getting into the architecture of =
the S760 and have nothing say short of that it's almost identical to =
that of the JV series. I recently acquired the venerable Country =
Collection expansion board for my XP60 to get the best collection of =
strat guitars on the planet. At the same time, I was little disappointed =
to part with my Experience expansion board, with which my XP60 needed =
for access to sounds for the compositions that I wrote prior to me =
taking the board out.

This prompted me to try to multi-sample the sounds of the country =
collection board and see if I could recreate them myself. After sampling =
different keys (g3, c3, going up in fourths), and messing with the TVA =
and TVF, I got the same exact sound as I had in my keyboard. This =
sampler is so amazing. I should point out that this was easy because the =
sound was in another Roland instrument, and the architecture of both =
instruments were nearly identical, which lead to me just "copying" a lot =
of parameters.

Anyone else do this sort of thing?

Greeting All,

Remember when I told you all that I was getting nasty clicks and pops =
when playing samples. Some of you advised to trim the end points of the =
samples to alleviate the problem. I insisted that this solution would =
probably work if you happened to record a sample and a pop was inherit =
in the sample itself. I found it hard to believe that a professional =
manufacturer would allow pops and clicks to show up on their releases, =
and I was hearing these clicks even on Roland CDs.

After doing a lot of my own sampling this weekend, I came to realize =
that my RAM may be bad. Examine this for a second. This weekend, I found =
myself sampling sounds off of a Roland SRJV Expansion card. the samples =
were clean, and I was able to adjust the envelopes to my taste. No =
clicks and pops were in any of my samples. As soon as I saved my stuff, =
and then loaded the three patches as a bank, I got clicks and pops on =
the third patch, and they weren't there when I recorded the original =
sample.

As a test, I cleared the memory and then loaded on patch where I =
experienced pops. When I did this, I got no pops to speak of. When =
loaded two more, then I started to get pops on the third patch. This =
lead me to believe that this happened when I filled up the memory to a =
certain point, which in turn lead me to believe that I may be dealing =
with bad RAM perhaps. This was the RAM that was installed in the unit =
when I got it off of ebay. I'm pretty sure this is the problem. Maybe =
the person installed it killed with static electricity or something. The =
unit functions fine, and I can load 32MB banks, I just have to put up =
with occasional clicks on some samples.

Do you all think this is a smart conclusion, and do you think installing =
new memory would remedy the problem? I've searched the archives and =
nothing like this has ever seemed to cross this road.

As another test, you could load a sample, transfer it to a computer, 
clear the S-760's memory, load that sample again (perhaps after 
loading other samples so it gets into a different memory location) and 
transfer it again. Then you can compare the two versions with a file 
compare tool. If they are different, then probably something is wrong 
with your sampler.

Hi guys,

I've arranged to have an interview with Eric Persing, to be published my
S-760 website. This should prove an interesting read in view of his close
relationship with Roland.

The interview will take the form of a list of questions submitted to him. As
many heads are better than one, I thought I'd give the Sgroup a shout and
ask people to send me questions they'd like to ask in relation to S-series
samplers (not just the S-760) as well as Spectrasonics for that matter.

Please email me your thoughts and questions over the next 8 days or so, I
will collect and format all emails. I must point out that I may not use all
the material I get so don't be disappointed if your particular question
doesn't make it. At the end of the day, I'll have to exercise editorial
priviledges on this.

So there you go, shoot. I'll be away until next Monday but I'll acknowledge

Since Zzounds redesigned their site, the link to the manuals has 
dissappeared....here it is once more, including many other mfgrs. 
Unfortunately, there is no associated title to each PDF.
