I'm a very poor student with an S760. I wondered if any of you could help me out, not all these questions are strictly on-topic, but any help would be appreciated. I'm currently running Cubasis in Win95 but since my laptop only has 4MB memory, things are cramped and I'm not all that optimistic about my chances of getting other programs running, like sample editors. I'm looking to switch to DOS. Can anyone tell me: (1) if there is a DOS sequencer which works with a MIDIman 2-in-3-out parallel-port-to-midi interface; (2) if there's any DOS-based sample editing software which I can use with one of these interfaces to send/receive sample data to/from the S760. I'm not expecting a yes to either of these questions, to be honest, but any help would be greatly appreciated. cheers! yam - Sent by the sgroup mailing list on lotus.uwaterloo.ca For subscription information, send mail to majordomo@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Fri Aug 1 19:36:55 1997 Received: from math.uwaterloo.ca (root@math.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.144]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id TAA28568 for ; Fri, 1 Aug 1997 19:36:54 -0400 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca (lotus.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.9]) by math.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id TAA26370 for ; Fri, 1 Aug 1997 19:36:53 -0400 (EDT) Received: by lotus.uwaterloo.ca id <183>; Fri, 1 Aug 1997 19:24:04 -0400 Received: from uclink4.berkeley.edu ([128.32.155.12]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <67>; Fri, 1 Aug 1997 19:23:14 -0400 Received: from [128.115.109.171] (larson29.llnl.gov [128.115.109.171]) by uclink4.berkeley.edu (8.8.4/8.6.12) with ESMTP id QAA32025 for ; Fri, 1 Aug 1997 16:23:07 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Fri, 1 Aug 1997 11:26:20 -0400 To: sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From: Chris Kirkham Subject: sgroup JAZ and S760 problems Sender: owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Precedence: bulk Status: R I am still having problems copying Roland data to a Jaz drive (the copying stalls permanently). I myself use Pentium PC with no SCSI card. I understand that Recycle! is the only softs available for PC that support sample dump via SCSI, and that Recycle is very groove oriented, meaning, it has bare bones sample editing power. What I would like to do is to be able to transfer samples between S760 and my computer quickly (that means no SDS!), then do the editing with respectable sample editing software. Any suggestion? At the computer fair, I saw a Power Macintosh 7220/200/L2 with 603e processor. It's quite affordable. Is it a good machine? (the 200 MHz speed looks cool, btw) Are all Power Macs have decent audio capabilities? See, I never use Mac before, so could you Maccies give me some information about sample editing available for Power Mac (like Transferstation for example) and can I use it with Power PC 7220 mention above? I remember someone told me to avoid Power Mac 7200s because it's not fast enough, is that true? Is Power Mac 7220 also 'not fast enough'? Thanks in advance. BTW, at the fair, I bought a external TV Tuner box named Instant TV. It has an S-Video input and can be use without CPU. Thanks for everybody (especially Mr. Anthony Bennett) who helped me finding video input for my PC. - Sent by the sgroup mailing list on lotus.uwaterloo.ca For subscription information, send mail to majordomo@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Sat Aug 9 15:02:23 1997 Received: from math.uwaterloo.ca (root@math.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.144]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id PAA08953 for ; Sat, 9 Aug 1997 15:02:22 -0400 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca (lotus.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.9]) by math.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id PAA13794 for ; Sat, 9 Aug 1997 15:02:21 -0400 (EDT) Received: by lotus.uwaterloo.ca id <159>; Sat, 9 Aug 1997 14:45:22 -0400 Received: from hil-img-4.compuserve.com ([149.174.177.134]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <138>; Sat, 9 Aug 1997 14:44:32 -0400 Received: (from root@localhost) by hil-img-4.compuserve.com (8.8.6/8.8.6/2.2) id OAA26970; Sat, 9 Aug 1997 14:44:29 -0400 (EDT) Date: Sat, 9 Aug 1997 14:43:58 -0400 From: Stefano Daino Subject: sgroup Off topic:Macintoshes To: Roland User List Cc: "Albert Juwono" Message-ID: <199708091444_MC2-1CBE-13BC@compuserve.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Disposition: inline Sender: owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Precedence: bulk Status: RO Hi Albert, >>> What I would like to do is to be able to transfer samples between S760 and my computer= quickly (that means no SDS!), then do the editing with respectable sample= editing software. Is this for a planned/never released SCSI option? Any chance using the S-50 without a monitor? Probably not, since my OS version 2.0 shows all the parameters only on the video screen. The manual says that the S-50 has after touch. Is this some kind of pressure sensivity like the Prophet T8 or the speed with which you release the key? What parameters are changeable in realtime (read midi controllers)? I tried to understand the german translation of the manual but didn't get a clue :( I'm interested in changing the sample start, filter parameters, LFO etc. Is there a service manual online somewhere? thanks & regards, Adrian -- adrian le hanne entomological rodeos alh@icf.de - Sent by the sgroup mailing list on lotus.uwaterloo.ca For subscription information, send mail to majordomo@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From lotus.uwaterloo.ca!owner-sgroup Mon Aug 11 17:27:37 1997 Received: from troll.uunet.ca ([142.77.1.10]) by angel.uunet.ca with ESMTP id <17283-12097>; Mon, 11 Aug 1997 17:27:35 -0400 Received: from ghost.uunet.ca ([142.77.1.100]) by troll.uunet.ca with ESMTP id <21015-11477>; Mon, 11 Aug 1997 17:27:28 -0400 Received: from seraph.uunet.ca ([142.77.1.254]) by ghost.uunet.ca with ESMTP id <4583-28999>; Mon, 11 Aug 1997 17:26:13 -0400 Received: from cicerone.uunet.ca ([142.77.1.11]) by seraph.uunet.ca with ESMTP id <657028-19828>; Mon, 11 Aug 1997 17:27:14 -0400 Received: from math.uwaterloo.ca ([129.97.140.144]) by mail.uunet.ca with ESMTP id <115271-17446>; Mon, 11 Aug 1997 17:27:05 -0400 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca (lotus.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.9]) by math.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id RAA31872 for ; Mon, 11 Aug 1997 17:27:00 -0400 (EDT) Received: by lotus.uwaterloo.ca id <170>; Mon, 11 Aug 1997 17:19:51 -0400 Received: from uclink4.berkeley.edu ([128.32.155.12]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <138>; Mon, 11 Aug 1997 17:18:46 -0400 Received: from [128.115.109.171] (larson29.llnl.gov [128.115.109.171]) by uclink4.berkeley.edu (8.8.4/8.6.12) with ESMTP id OAA06528 for ; Mon, 11 Aug 1997 14:18:34 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: In-Reply-To: <970811161405_1316919925@emout16.mail.aol.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date:Mon, 11 Aug 1997 09:22:26 -0400 To: sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From: Chris Kirkham Subject: Re: sgroup Trackball Sender: owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Precedence: bulk Status: R Ben, I looked into that a while ago and ran into a lot of frustration, I called Redmond CAble who are recommended by Roland, but it didn't look like it would work. >Hello from a new member of the Sgroup mailing list. I own a Mac and S760 and have been using Samplifier (the most recent version, 1.1b1) to SCSI-transfer samples, but it has not been working well. Once I got corrupted samples (reproducibly, after altering many parameters). It doesn't maintain stereo sample transfers to the S760, and is glitchy with sample names on transfering to the S760. Another problem, that Transfer Station takes care of, is that Samplifier does not adjust for the Roland High-end emphasis, therefore one must do this by hand with the S760, individually, for every sample. That is a major pain because it is slow on the S760's processor. One nice thing about samplifier is that it builds a patch and partials for you and can use sound designer II files. I was looking foward to your software, which looks cheaper than Transfer Station, and might be more reliable and have better features than Samplifier. Unfortunally also both midi I/O connections are require= d, due a Roland protocol request. You can transfer the tone (samples, name, loop points) to/from a specific location. Unfortunally I didn't understan= d how to create remotely a stereo sample, so you must transfer both L and R= samples and then to assign them for a stereo image. In this version, it doesn't care of the Roland High-end emphasis (I don't how it works, but I= can ask to Roland Dev to support it in the future). I have not a S760, I worked in a music shop in Rome for some days to test= the code. I found some very hidden problems in the way the S760 creates a= new sample (the same problems for SDS dumps), I fixed them and now it SEE= MS it works very well trasferring very long sounds back and forth many times= =2E But I will need users' feedback to be sure there are not other hidden anomalies. This is the shareware, and this is the only way to mantain the= costs of the software production very low. I have not the money to buy a S760 for D-SoundPRO development (but I consider it an excellent sampler...). But I love to think that people can use HighEnd software for= only $30... D-SoundPRO 3.0 is a full graphical sound editor, wave generator and virtu= al synthesizer. It is not totally complete, but it offers a lot of advanced professional functions. But it is not a specific sampler editor, so it is= not able to construct a patch into Akai, E-MU, Kurzweil, Roland, Ensoniq,= etc... samplers. About file formats, it is able to load/save sounds in AIFF, SDII and .WAV (all formats in mono, stereo with loops points and mi= di parameters). As soon as the version 3.0 will be available (the first week of september= ) I'll put the user manual on the web, so everybody can check for its feature. I don't know about Samplifier and Transfer Station very well, and I'm not= the right person to make a comparison with D-SoundPRO. But I know Samplifier is shareware. Probably Roland users can use them side by side with D-SoundPRO, and the cost of the whole package is not so high. Your help >is much appreciated. > >Regards, > >Ron Campbell This is a complicated process, if I remember correctly. This explanation comes from memory 4 years old! Maybe someone else can tell you more, but this is how I remember doing it. First, the individual tones are stored in ram in either secton A or B,and each one has an equal amount of RAM or (sample time, if you look at it that way). Each patch is made up of a number of these tones. So let's say you have piano, organ, and choir on one disk, and violin, bass, and horns on another. And you want a disk that consists of organ and bass. After bootup, load the first patch that you want, say, the organ. Now switch disks and load the bass. You may get a message saying that there is insufficient memory. Then you will have to go into the ram areas, and delete part of the tones that make up the initial patch. This is ok, as long as you delete the tones you will probably not use (very high or very low) Once you have enough room to load the next patch, save the patches using a new disk. The annoying part about it, is that there are some patches that you will never be able to put together, because of Ram limitations. Hope this helps! I have read the manual 'flat' and can not >> get the info. >> Thanks >> Aubrey >> Aubrey, You can: 1) Assign filter cutoff (or more precisely, TVF amount applied to cutoff frequency) to Velocity in the Partial TVF screen. Under "Envelope", change the TVF depth to a non-zero value (negative values reduce the cutoff, positive ones increase it), then adjust the Vel Sens parameter to taste. The resulting value (TVF Depth) x (Velocity) x (Envelope Amt over time) is then added to the Cutoff Freq amount you have set for the partial. Or 2) Assign Bend, Aftertouch, Mod Wheel or other controller of your choice to TVF depth in the Patch Control screen. Set the figure in the column under the controller of your choice on the TVF Control row to a non-zero amount. The last (Ctrl) is set by selecting a controller on the line above marked (Ctrl Select). Once again, you must adjust the Partial TVF first to the required cutoff amount. I don't know of any way to do this for Resonance. Seeing as there are Reso and Cutoff offsets under Performance and Patch, there may be a MIDI Exclusive sequence that will do it, but I don't know what it is. Neither. It has pretty much the same effect as method 1) except that the controller is no longer velocity. The selected controller modulates the amount of 'influence' of the TVF. You may do the same with the LFO (control the amount of modulation that the LFO provides to filter cutoff) further down the page. Yes, but don't forget! The S-760 has 2 envelope sections, one for the filter and one for the VCA (or it's digital equivalent). You can get the same effect as on the S550 in the following way: Alter the TVF parameters in the Partial TVF screen so that the envelope forms a straight line, then set the Cutoff Freq and the TVF Depth to taste. This gives a constant filter cutoff over the whole note. _Then_ assign aftertouch to TVF Control in the Patch Control screen. This gives the same effect as the function you have described on the S550. By manipulating the TVF even further, it's possible to come up with very complex time-variant & modulated sounds. 1. that enigma pan flute sound ( I've got the roland s50 ive got a sound called "steamer" that sounds alot like the enigma panflute. its a pretty common one i think.. its in s-330 format, which is easily converted to .wav.. and maybe i could convert to w-30. why not go to a flea market and buy a panflute, or a bamboo recorder type thing.. and sample it. you only have to play one note. youll probably end up with LOADS of good samples. i did this by buying a tamborine. mike >> the steamer sound is one of the W30's ROM sounds--it should be available after the W30 first boots up off the system disk 8-) - Sent by the sgroup mailing list on lotus.uwaterloo.ca For subscription information, send mail to majordomo@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From kloppers@ufrmsa1.olivetti.za Sat Aug 30 13:27:35 1997 Received: from angel.uunet.ca (localhost.uunet.ca [127.0.0.1]) by pollux.uunet.ca (8.8.6/8.8.6) with ESMTP id NAA04550 for ; Sat, 30 Aug 1997 13:27:35 -0400 (EDT) Received: from troll.uunet.ca ([142.77.1.10]) by angel.uunet.ca with ESMTP id <17206-8888>; Sat, 30 Aug 1997 13:24:47 -0400 Received: from ghost.uunet.ca ([142.77.1.100]) by troll.uunet.ca with ESMTP id <44609-27443>; Sat, 30 Aug 1997 13:24:28 -0400 Received: from seraph.uunet.ca ([142.77.1.254]) by ghost.uunet.ca with ESMTP id <4776-6191>; Sat, 30 Aug 1997 13:24:20 -0400 Received: from mail2.uunet.ca ([142.77.1.15]) by seraph.uunet.ca with ESMTP id <657157-5986>; Sat, 30 Aug 1997 13:24:17 -0400 Received: from math.uwaterloo.ca ([129.97.140.144]) by mail2.uunet.ca with ESMTP id <123174-10307>; Sat, 30 Aug 1997 13:24:14 -0400 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca (lotus.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.9]) by math.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id NAA29837 for ; Sat, 30 Aug 1997 13:24:05 -0400 (EDT) Received: by lotus.uwaterloo.ca id <160>; Sat, 30 Aug 1997 13:06:18 -0400 Received: from angel.uunet.ca ([142.77.1.8]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <159>; Sat, 30 Aug 1997 13:05:11 -0400 Received: from pollux.uunet.ca ([209.47.143.131]) by angel.uunet.ca with ESMTP id <17206-8887>; Sat, 30 Aug 1997 13:04:52 -0400 Received: (from jsellens@localhost) by pollux.uunet.ca (8.8.6/8.8.6) id NAA04495 for sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca; Sat, 30 Aug 1997 13:04:44 -0400 (EDT) Received: from ufrmsa1.olivetti.za ([160.124.247.2]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <159>; Sat, 30 Aug 1997 07:39:58 -0400 Received: from seven by ufrmsa1.olivetti.za with smtp (Smail3.1.29.1 #3) id m0x4lrQ-000CaqC; Sat, 30 Aug 97 13:38 GMT+0200 Message-Id: From: "sev'E'n" To: "s760" Subject: sgroup RC100 - Where to get one?
