I am not talking about the half written ReCycle where you have to disable half of your machine to get a 2sec sample to your S760, but a fully fledged SCSI interface into a S-760 from a PC. I have seen quite a few writings on MAC software, but none on PC. I have already spoken to SonicFoundry, and they are not even close to doing any implimentation on SoundForge (Although a kick-ass package) to the S760 via SCSI. Maybe this should also be asked to the makers of ReCycle as they did get a small subset of the S760's SCSI going. Thank you for your time. I typically may be working on several types of music at once, so I organize my patches in several performances like "jazz", "funk", "house", etc. That way, when I'm editing a house track, I just select the house performance on the 760, and I should be ready to go. However, lets say in my MIDI file, a particular bass patch is MIDI patch #31. The 760 doesn't seem to record the absolute patch number I assign, though, so if tomorrow I load a different assortment of performances, or load them in a different order, the bass sound I want might now be MIDI patch #14. Is there a way where I will have the best chance of retaining the MIDI patch number over time? I think the hierarchal sound organization in the 760 OS does have a method to its madness, but it has been the single most difficult part of the sampler for me to become comfortable with... Roland's documentation has provided me with little solace. If anyone could be so kind as to share their thoughts on patch management and so forth, I'd really appreciate it. (BTW, on the subject of unfilling manuals, I went and looked to see if mine had the Sysex chart others have been asking about... mine doesn't have it either) -Steve - Sent by the sgroup mailing list on lotus.uwaterloo.ca For subscription information, send mail to majordomo@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Sun Jul 6 17:02:05 1997 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca (lotus.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.9]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id RAA00382 for ; Sun, 6 Jul 1997 17:02:03 -0400 Received: by lotus.uwaterloo.ca id <159>; Sun, 6 Jul 1997 16:44:35 -0400 Received: from smtp2.erols.com ([205.252.116.102]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <196>; Sun, 6 Jul 1997 15:38:28 -0400 Received: from [207.172.73.118] (man-as2s55.erols.com [207.172.73.118]) by smtp2.erols.com (8.8.6/8.8.5) with ESMTP id MAA03373 for ; Thu, 26 Jun 1997 12:58:18 -0400 (EDT) Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 12:58:18 -0400 X-Sender: mrsyms@pop.erols.com Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" To: sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From: Tim Goodwin Subject: sgroup S-video out on S-760 Sender: owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Precedence: bulk Status: R Does anyone know if it would be possible to connect the S-Video output on the S-760's digital I/O board to the S-Video input on either the XClaim VR 3D, or the Micro Conversions Video Wizard video accelerator cards and effectively place the S-760's montior on my Mac's desktop? If you didn't catch the review in last month's KEYBOARD (US), you can find out more about this new double ROM package by visiting http://www.sampleheads.com. We are very proud of this rom and we think it's the best of its class. My problem is that I've only used the s550 as a device to load and play samples. I've yet to sample or edit existing samples. With this utility program, I must first `create a tone' on the sampler that uses the whole wave bank I will be using (note: when converting the .wav file, it prompts the user to specify bank a or bank b). After the transfer, I can adjust the loop settings to fit the size of the sample. This sysex does not contain any patch or tone information, just the plain sample data. So my question is: "How do I create a tone"? The helpful folks @ Roland were not much help so I thought I'd go ask the REAL pros here. BTW, I'd be happy to send this program to anyone that needs it. I take it you're not a mac head? If you think about the file system of the 760 as a pyramid, with the lowest element being the sample.... yeah, you've read it all in the book, but you can try these tips: Use 1 performance for a song or a section of a song. Consider this: the samples will only be written to disc ONCE. This is a big concept. ALL other parameters are tiny. They are all referencing the existing samples. NEVER overwrite the samples. But ALWAYS overwrite the performance. Remember, patches can be modified from within a performance... so be careful whe overwriting. Apple VideoMonitor (not sure if this is the correct name) should do the trick. The selection of which video-input to use is done in software, so just make sure that the videocard has Mac-drivers. I did this with my old S-550/Mac Quadra 660AV using the composite videoports. After a while I got tired of switching between my sequencer and the S-550 screen, so I went back to using a stand-alone monitor for the S-550. Is there a way where I will have the best chance of retaining > the MIDI patch number over time? Use the "PG#" parameter on any of the Patch pages (or in the Select Patch popup). It's in the middle of the screen, right under the Patch name. This sets the MIDI Program Change number for the Patch. This paramter is stored with the Patch, and is completely separate from the patch number displayed in lists on RAM or on disk, so it stays correct regardless of the order in which Patches are loaded. For (slightly) more info, see page 3-15 of the Advanced manual. The Basic manual has some info on pages 9-2 and 9-3, but it neglects to actually name the "PG#" parameter (it calls it "Program #). There is a little flicker due to the electro-magnetic interference between the two monitors, but the S-760 monitor has the power switch on the front, so it's easy to flip it off and on. In addition, I have a friend who is going to give me a sheet of lead to put between the monitors, which I hope will cut down the interference. From my experience with these products and the desired outcome I would suggest having a look at the Video Blaster SE100. You don't want a video capture card as such to display the S-760 video output in a window on a PC, what you really want is a video overlay card. Video overlay requires almost zero CPU time and it doesn't matter that it is an ISA bus card as the video data is passed straight from the SE100 to your video card via the feature connector. I have used the VB SE100 to watch cricket matches in a window on my desktop while I work. In this scenario I had a VCR acting as my TV receiver and then took the composite video output of the VCR and fed this into one of the video ins on the SE100. The only "gotcha" with the SE100 and video overlay cards in general is that they require use of your video card's feature connector and this opens up a possible Pandora's box. If you buy one make sure it is from a place that will refund your money in case your card's feature connector cannot be enable under Win95 or your video card's driver are incompatible in general. After saying all this though, I still believe the better option is to use a separate monitor unless you experience noise problems. My setup has a an external TV Tuner box which has S-VHS and Composite video inputs and VGA output sitting in-between my S-760 and an old Acer 14" SVGA monitor. I actually worked things out myself when the list was dead last week, but everyone's feedback is illuminating nonetheless. I believe my point of confusion was over the distinction between MIDI program numbers and 760 internally-stored patch numbers... The former are stored across performances, while the latter don't seem to be of much use, as they change relative to what order you load the performances in. So, I solved my organizational nightmare fairly easily by loading in my performances one by one, setting each patch to a unique program number (kinda sorta based on general midi, just so I have a method to my madness...) and then saving it back. Planning on paper (well, in a text editor...) how I wanted everything to interrelate was very helpful, and now everything works great. I've even become semi-proficient lately with the "split" screen for assigning partials to patches (I can't count the times I've messed up my work while setting up a drum kit patch by, say, forgetting to change "O.W." to "1 Key" when mapping a partial... easy enough to fix but a nuisance). Overall, everything I figure out with the 760 OS seems to suggest that it's a good tool once you approach it with the proper methodology. But figuring out the optimal methodology can be quite an adventure. :-) -Steve - Sent by the sgroup mailing list on lotus.uwaterloo.ca For subscription information, send mail to majordomo@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Fri Jul 11 03:53:11 1997 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca (lotus.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.9]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id DAA24423 for ; Fri, 11 Jul 1997 03:53:09 -0400 Received: by lotus.uwaterloo.ca id <171>; Fri, 11 Jul 1997 03:44:01 -0400 Received: from shell.wco.com ([199.4.94.16]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <183>; Fri, 11 Jul 1997 03:37:38 -0400 Received: (from ai@localhost) by shell.wco.com (8.8.5/8.8.5/WCO-2jun97) id JAA04721; Thu, 10 Jul 1997 09:46:07 -0700 (PDT) Date: Thu, 10 Jul 1997 12:46:07 -0400 From: ai Message-Id: <199707101646.JAA04721@shell.wco.com> To: sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Subject: sgroup =====HELP: Problems with digital overload on S760 ===== Cc: ai@shell.wco.com Sender: owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Precedence: bulk Status: RO Hello, I have an S760 with the OP-760-1 option. I recently purchased a CD player which has S/PDIF output and tried connecting this digital out to the digital in on the S760. Problem: with the S760 set to 0 digital attenuation, when I try sampling an audio CD via S/PDIF to the S760, the monitor lights (L/R) on the S760 video display overload into the red sometimes. 1. how is this possible? I thought that by sending digital data from the audio CD to the S760 via S/PDIF, that it's just 16-bit numbers that are being sent - hence no value greater than 0xffff (or 0x7fff) could be sent. If so, what causes the overload? 2. when I listen to the audio CD via the analog outputs, the parts that seem to overload on the S760 don't sound like they are overloading on my speakers. Wierd. 3. I tried setting the digital attenuation to -3 or -6 on the S760. This lowered the volume - but the occaisional peaks still sounded distorted. 4. Could it be that the original source material (audio CD) has occaisional overloads/clips itself? 5. Or - Could any of the above anomalies be due to possible differences in the S/PDIF out from the CD player (NEC CDR-601) and the 'type' of S/PDIF that the S760 digital in is expecting? Other than this occaisional overloading, I can sample fine from the CD player to the S760 via S/PDIF. Any opinions? Yep, it is indeed the (damned) pre-emphasis of the S760 that causes the distortion. I also had the same problem when sampling some hi-hats, and wondered what might cause it. When sampling, the pre-emphasis adds a little high-end to samples (digitally), and in playback there's some (analog) filter that removes the high boost, resulting a little better noise level or something like that. Unfortunately, if you sample sounds that are normalized and contain a lot of high frequencies, the pre-emphasis will most probably cause some distortion. The only way to avoid this is to use the digital attenuation and normalize the samples afterwards.. a little stupid, if you ask me, but that is just one of the strange things in S760... :) (BTW, generally speaking, when monitoring digital audio with S760 or any other device, many meters may show clipping or overload if two or more successive samples are in the peak level. That doesn't necessarily mean that the sound is distorted, many heavily compressed and normalized sounds may "distort" according to the meters, but sound just fine..)=20 Markus "Captain" Kaarlonen "A film is - or should be - more like music M2 Productions than like fiction. Normal way, when you sampling under patch, you get names to all levels, but when you import StandartMidiDump samples via midi (Awave & ect..), procedure is diffrent (Mean & slow ;-). After all dumps you have to rename your samples and then you have to give new name to partials and patches.. 3 times to type same name ! :( I find nice "shortcut" to name partials/patch. 1. name all samples to right names. 2. go partial/SMT and select _empty_ partial. 3. select right sample. 4. "edit" samplename: - right mouse click on leftbox - left mouse click on CR 5. Edit partial name: - right mouse click on leftbox and you note, you have name allready on line :) - left mouse click on CR this method not work if select partial wich have name allready !. use same trick to name Patch. bye, Jouko Sivusalo jouko.sivusalo@zman.pp.fi - Sent by the sgroup mailing list on lotus.uwaterloo.ca For subscription information, send mail to majordomo@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Mon Jul 14 08:03:56 1997 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca (lotus.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.9]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id IAA09899 for ; Mon, 14 Jul 1997 08:03:55 -0400 Received: by lotus.uwaterloo.ca id <170>; Mon, 14 Jul 1997 07:53:48 -0400 Received: from mailhost.pi.net ([145.220.3.9]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <67>; Mon, 14 Jul 1997 07:52:58 -0400 Received: from pi-user.pi.net (amf72.pi.net [145.220.198.72]) by mailhost.pi.net (8.8.3/8.7.1) with SMTP id NAA12334 for ; Mon, 14 Jul 1997 13:52:46 +0200 (MET DST) Posted-Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 13:52:46 +0200 (MET DST) Message-ID: <33CA1353.6123@pi.net> Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 07:53:55 -0400 From: Corwin Winkelman X-Mailer: Mozilla 2.02E-PI-32 (Win95; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Roland S-list Subject: sgroup (no subject) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Precedence: bulk Status: R Hi, Newby to this list, so praobably annoying question: Is there any windows software for the S550. I checked the ftp-site, but all these programs are DOS. Furthermore I downloaded the sample-banks from the ftp-site. None of them seemed to work. S550 says it's loading, but in the end there's nothing in the memory? Any idea what could be wrong? Thnx! Corwin ps.: I bought a Peavey Analog Filter and use it with my S550. It rocks! anyone else on this list any experiences with it. In spite of the efforts of each station to reduce spending costs and streamline their services, some government officials believe that the funding currently going to these programs is too large a portion of funding for something which is seen as "unworthwhile". Currently, taxes from the general public for PBS equal $1.12 per person per year, and the National Endowment for the Arts equals $.64 a year in total. >>A January 1995 CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll indicated that 76% of Americans wish to keep funding for PBS, third only to national defense and law enforcement as the most valuable programs for federal funding. >>Each year, the Senate and House Appropriations committees each have 13 subcommittees with jurisdiction over many programs and agencies. Each subcommittee passes its own appropriation bill. The goal each year is to have each bill signed by the beginning of the fiscal year, which is October 1. >>The only way that our representatives can be aware of the base of support for PBS and funding for these types of programs is by making our voices heard. >>Please add your name to this list and forward it to friends if you believe in what we stand for. This list will be forwarded to the President of the United States, the Vice President of the United States, and Representative Newt Gingrich, who is the instigator of the action to cut funding to these worthwhile programs. >>If you happen to be the 150th, 200th, 250th etc. signer of this petition, please forward a copy to: wein2688@blue.univnorthco.edu. We've got to be active in saving these important institutions! Please sign! If you sign, please forward on to others (not back to me). If not, please don't kill it -- send it to the email address listed here: wein2688@blue.univnorthco.edu >>Public Radio and Public Television are facing major cuts in funding. If that address is inoperative, please send it to: kubi7975@blue.univnorthco.edu. Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Precedence: bulk Status: R Finally picked up a SCSI CD-ROM for my 760 (found an old double speed external on a back shelf at work, which they let me just have...) and have been enjoying the Preview CD-ROM that I got with the sampler way back when. My question is this... I seem to recall reading somewhere in the documentation that there was a way that I could create a performance, and save just the performance parameters to a disk, and have the wave data itself still be read off of the CD. Since I only have one CD-ROM right now, it'd be nice if I could just set my own output mappings, patch numbers, etc., and not have to replicate 20 megs of sample data unnecessarily just to do so. Toast crashed when doing this. I think the crashing is related to the "block copy" field in Toast. The preview dis's defalut block copy value was equal to that of the preview CD's actual value. Also Toast would automatically deselect the "clear driver descripter map" option for the preview disk. I successfully made a backup of another Roland CD and I noticed Toast defaulted to a "block copy" field value 150 less than the CD's actual value. Also unlike the preview disk, Toast automatically selected the "clear driver descripter map" option. Going back to the preview disk, I subtracted 150 blocks, and was able to select the clear DDM option, and the disk burned fine. Can someone please explain what this is all about and if this missing 150 blocks will lead to problems with the Roland data? Should 150 be subsracted for all of my Roland and Akai CD backups? Any other Roland-related CD-burning wisdom? I know the Jaz works fine with my Mac. I have tried several different sources of data (CDs), CDROM drives, one hard drive, two Jaz cartidges, two OS 2.24 disks, multiple SCSI configurations, ids and terminators. For example, if you take the Roland Preview CD and copy the volumes to the Jaz, the drive always crashes on the Cheese Kits Volume (I have tried two preview CDs!). Try Olympus -> Sender: owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Precedence: bulk Status: RO For those seeking a low cost, reliable removeable medium for their S-760. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend the Olympus SYS.230 removeable optical drive. I've used it with the S-760 and a MAC for over a year with no problems whatsoever. The cartridges come in a 5-pack for only $50; that's five 230meg cartridges at only $10 each! They are warrantied for life. Also, the drive unit is solidly built, unlike the ZIP units. Most importantly, the data is safe from EM fields. I've had so many problems with ZIP and JAZ disks losing data, I can't stress enough the importance of using an optical medium. SYS.230 drives (external) are somewhere in the neighborhood of $350, and like I said, a gig of cartridges is only $50! - Sent by the sgroup mailing list on lotus.uwaterloo.ca For subscription information, send mail to majordomo@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Tue Jul 29 03:23:28 1997 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca (lotus.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.9]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id DAA00366 for ; Tue, 29 Jul 1997 03:23:26 -0400 Received: by lotus.uwaterloo.ca id <183>; Tue, 29 Jul 1997 03:08:23 -0400 Received: from vassun1.macau.ctm.net ([202.175.3.3]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <171>; Tue, 29 Jul 1997 03:07:32 -0400 Received: from jmexit.macau.ctm.net (c28line2.macau.ctm.net [202.175.4.169]) by vassun1.macau.ctm.net (8.6.12/8.6.12) with ESMTP id PAA16027 for ; Tue, 29 Jul 1997 15:06:48 +0800 Message-ID: <33DD94D6.9B45F4F8@macau.ctm.net> Date: Tue, 29 Jul 1997 02:59:34 -0400 From: J-M Mariojouls X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.01 [en] (Win95; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Subject: sgroup Storage ! Some people who want to get rid of their S-330/S-550/S-7xx may want to sell the RC-100 separately. I used to have the S-550 with the RC-100 remote, and it was a great combination. Never before I have been able to work so rapidly and intuitively. Then I sold both to a friend of mine and I bought the S-760. First, I kinda missed my good ol' RC, but after some days I had to admit that the S-760's operating system is definitively made for the MOUSE. I was really surprised how fast I could work with it, and many actions are a lot more easily performed using a mouse instead of the RC-100. Even hacking in names is a finger snip with the 'mouse keyboard' ! --> Though I used to love it, I don't need it any more on the S-760. On the S-330, there is also an operating system supporting the mouse, but at least if you're using the SYS-333 sequencer, I'd really recommend the RC-100 because it's just neat to have tape-like controls (REC/START/STOP etc...) and fast access to screen pages. This is my first post to this group but have been tuning in for awhile. I'm trying to increase my sample editing capabilities. I've tried both the DOS and the Windows versions of Sample Vision....The DOS version keeps complaining that there is not enough memory in my s330 when I try to send an editted sample back to the machine....Even though 95% of the sampler's memory is empty and the sample I'm trying to send to it is a skinny little closed hi-hat sample!!! The Windows version of Sample Vision doesn't seem to support the S-330...At least the version I have that I downloaded from Turtle Beack 6 Months ago. Any help with the above 2 prob's would be wonderful.... I also had the idea that maybe I could get a sample from my S-330, into my computer some other way and edit it with one of the jillion editors available these days... Now, I have a copy of SDISK which works well for what it's supposed to do.....Does anyone know if the image file in the PC can be converted to something like a .wav or whatever file??? Alternatively does any one know how the Sdisk image file is constructed?? So that a simple program could be written to convert the image format to a series of .wav files and then back again. Obviusly this is a convoluted way to tackle the problem. If there is another way to get S-330 samples into a PC for editing....I would love to know.. My apologies for the long-winded post....I do go on and on! (you can use this to yr advantage to trick the 330 into higher sampling frequency.. ie 44.1k. just ignore the previous warning and pitch the sample up on the 330 until its the right pitch, uses more memory tho) also, for some reason my samples sound REALLY bad when exported to samplevision, but when dumped to the sampler it sounds fine (?). > I also had the idea that maybe I could get a sample from my S-330, into my > computer some other way and edit it with one of the jillion editors > available these days...
