I have two Roland Samplers, one is the all time favorite S-760 and an MS-1 micro sampler. Both is great instruments, I use them a lot. Few weeks ago, I sold my trusty Apple CD300 and bought a new Apple CD600Ee (quadspeed). When I try the CD Player feature on my S-760 I was very dissapointed 'coz it didn't work. I've tried all the eight drivers available, and still get the error message. I thought Roland samplers always work well with Macs accessories. I use a pair of 16 MB Macintosh SIMMS, and I have good times using CD Player function with my late Apple CD300. Has anyone experienced same problem? Is there any extra driver to be included in software upgrades? I hope someone can give me an answer. I already posted that, but in case anyone missed it, here it is again: I have a Plextor PX-43CE CDROM drive which was IMHO too good to be replaced by any other drive (very fast access time which is important if you load many (small) samples), but it didn't work on the S-760: I also got this error message. 'Cos I like hex editors, I've tried to find out what's going on, and using the sdisk program (Roland Japan has it: See their www site) I captured the system floppy disk, and here's what I found out: ********** WARNING: ********** Try this only if you are an experienced technician or computer 'hacker' !!! I couldn't take any responsibility for any problems or defects that may result from the changes to the S-760's operating system. I can only tell that it definitely works on my machine. Also, it may not work for ANY SCSI CD drive on the market... ****************************** Like many other programs, the S-760's OS tries to find out the CD drive type by reading its ID string via SCSI. There is a list of about 20 different drives stored and if any of them matches, the sampler will use it. If NOT, you could try the following: (MAKE A BACKUP FIRST !) - Find the CD drive ID string block (in OS 2.24, it should be at $2E8840) - Change the string exactly to the string displayed for your drive (Even if the S-760 doesn't support your drive, it will show its name in CD player mode) - I am not sure if the OS is checksum-protected, but to feel safe, I changed another string to make the ASCII sum for the whole string table remain the same as before. (That's what most checksum algo's require) BTW: This procedure took me about half an hour, so it's not THAT big deal. Good luck - Stefan. - Sent by the sgroup mailing list on lotus.uwaterloo.ca For subscription information, send mail to majordomo@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Fri Feb 7 09:11:05 1997 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca (lotus.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.9]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id JAA29185 for ; Fri, 7 Feb 1997 09:11:04 -0500 Received: by lotus.uwaterloo.ca id <137>; Fri, 7 Feb 1997 08:58:59 -0500 Received: from algw2.lucent.com ([205.147.213.2]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <39>; Fri, 7 Feb 1997 08:58:08 -0500 Received: from aloft by alig2.firewall.lucent.com (SMI-8.6/EMS-L sol2) id IAA06944; Fri, 7 Feb 1997 08:58:28 -0500 Received: from acropolis (acropolis.micro.lucent.com) by aloft (4.1/DCS-aloft-M10.1) id AA10811; Fri, 7 Feb 97 08:57:30 EST Received: by acropolis (4.1/DCS-aloft_spooler-S3.1) id AA16583; Fri, 7 Feb 97 08:57:28 EST Date: Fri, 7 Feb 1997 08:57:28 -0500 From: wbf@aloft.micro.lucent.com (William B Fox) Message-Id: <9702071357.AA16583@acropolis> To: sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Subject: sgroup EMUSIC Playlist Sender: owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Precedence: bulk Status: R Playlist for "EMUSIC" on WDIY-FM, Allentown 88.1 FM in Allentown/Bethleham and 93.9 FM in Easton/Phillipsburg Show #3 February 6, 1997 Host: Bill Fox This show started the month-long focus on the emusic scene in the Netherlands. Problem I have is that I can get the sample from the PC to the S-760 but once there it will not play. I mean, the S-760 shows a sample it's there and taking up some memory and I can build a partial around the sample but when I trigger the sample the light on the S-760 come on but I hear no sound. If I sample directly into the S-760 using Quick Sample I have no problems. Are there any tricks or default settings that I might be missing or any general "traps for new players" when using MIDI Sample Dump to receive samples? Is anyone using the same setup, i.e Sound Forge 4.0 and S-760, and successfully editing samples in SF and then transferring them to the S-760? The memory expansion (don't know if it's still available but I doubt it) required a bank-selection scheme similar to the W30 package they also offered. Not really worth it IMHO. The memory expansion does not allow you to use the expanded memory at the same time as your regular memory. It lets you quickly flip between banks, but this is not very practical. It might be useful in the live performance context, where you could switch disks with lightning speed by pre-loading them into separate memory banks but I couldn't imagine trying to create a song using this scheme, even if the bank selection responded quickly to a MIDI prog change or something it would still certainly silence all currently sounding notes. I love my S-330 and I've been using it since they came out, but my next sampler's going to be a SampleCell. Seems to have the fewest headaches from what I've seen & heard. ______________________________________________________________________ Steve Cowan, Wavestation Mailing List Admin. lost@astral.magic.ca Subscription requests to: majordomo@salinas.net Web site: http://www.magic.ca/~lost/ws.html - Sent by the sgroup mailing list on lotus.uwaterloo.ca For subscription information, send mail to majordomo@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Mon Feb 10 16:34:10 1997 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca (lotus.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.9]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id QAA01852 for ; Mon, 10 Feb 1997 16:34:08 -0500 Received: by lotus.uwaterloo.ca id <64>; Mon, 10 Feb 1997 16:20:57 -0500 Received: from mail1.grove.ufl.EDU ([128.227.8.81]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <39>; Mon, 10 Feb 1997 14:39:12 -0500 Received: from birch.grove.ufl.EDU (hotrod@grove.ufl.edu [128.227.8.10]) by mail1.grove.ufl.EDU (8.8.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id OAA02607; Mon, 10 Feb 1997 14:38:50 -0500 (EST) Received: from localhost (hotrod@localhost) by birch.grove.ufl.EDU (8.8.5/8.7.3/3) with SMTP id OAA24947; Mon, 10 Feb 1997 14:38:46 -0500 (EST) Date: Mon, 10 Feb 1997 14:38:46 -0500 From: grilledcheese X-Sender: hotrod@birch To: Steve Cowan cc: sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Subject: Re: sgroup s-330 questions In-Reply-To: Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Precedence: bulk Status: R does anyone know of a reasonbly easy way to edit samples on a PC and midi dump to a s-330? the person that sold me the S-330 had a mac setup and he did it all the time, since i use a PC he couldn't help me at all. id like to think that theres shareware thatll do the trick, but i guess thats pretty pie in the sky. anybody use a PC + 330? i need to get this working. mike ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "...We all realised that it doesn't really matter what you play, it'll sound good because of what you're plugged into." -sarah peacock of seefeel - Sent by the sgroup mailing list on lotus.uwaterloo.ca For subscription information, send mail to majordomo@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Mon Feb 10 18:47:36 1997 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca (lotus.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.9]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id SAA04383 for ; Mon, 10 Feb 1997 18:47:35 -0500 Received: by lotus.uwaterloo.ca id <66>; Mon, 10 Feb 1997 18:36:47 -0500 Received: from mule0.mindspring.com ([204.180.128.166]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <39>; Mon, 10 Feb 1997 18:35:51 -0500 Received: from [38.26.23.233] (ip233.an12-new-york4.ny.pub-ip.psi.net [38.26.23.233]) by mule0.mindspring.com (8.8.4/8.8.4) with SMTP id SAA76172 for ; Mon, 10 Feb 1997 18:35:12 -0500 Message-Id: <199702102335.SAA76172@mule0.mindspring.com> Subject: sgroup max cable length for 760 mouse? I don't know about doing an SDS, but Syntrillium software makes the killer wave editor (IMHO), CoolEdit. I'm using CoolEdit 96 in conjunction with Cakewalk Pro Audio 5.0 and occasionally my JS-30. I don't do MIDI sample dumps, I just record off my audio card directly into the JS-30 when I want to use the sampler -- but then, I'm using a CardD+, so I've few quality issues ... Some people seem to like the GoldWave editor better than CoolEdit, but I think that's just a matter of taste -- since they're both available as crippled shareware, do a web search and try them both! You need to assign the retrieved sample to a partial, a partial to a patch, and a patch to a performance. This is a complicated job, but you've got to do this. I use CoolEdit96 to edit the sample and Awave 3.2 to transfer it between my PC and my S-760. I just got on the sgroup mailing list and I am extremely glad that there are other S-550 users on the net (finally some support)! I just bought my S-550 a few months ago without a manual so I'm still kind of in the dark, but I'd like to do some sample trading soon as I get it all figured out. If anybody wants to share any secrets, tips, utilities that I can't live without, etc. I won't argue! Also, I didn't see any utilities in the archive that allows Mac users to convert .WAV or AIFF sound formats -->Roland 12 bit tones. I'm sure this question has been asked a zillion times before, but does anybody know of any software that will allow this? I set m sequencer playing a single whole measure note over at 100 and change the pitch of the sample. I can go in and shit off the key follow so any note will trigger that sample at the same speed. So far so good. Now, if I want to go to the page where I set start times, the sample key follw is now back on, so I cannot use thsi methos to set the start time... Make sense? The CDRom works well on an Akai S2000. I have used the S760's convert load with a number of Akai disks, and it has worked well. However, a few weeks ago, I saw the phenomena described above for the first time. It was with Q-Up Arts' Digeridoo disk, which I was looking into reviewing. The disk is labeled as S1000/S3000 format. Same thing - volume names were displayed, but the files themselves did not appear. I wonder whether these disks are S3000 or S2000 format, instead of S1000. - Dan - Sent by the sgroup mailing list on lotus.uwaterloo.ca For subscription information, send mail to majordomo@lotus.uwaterloo.ca From owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Thu Feb 27 12:23:52 1997 Received: from math.uwaterloo.ca (root@math.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.144]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id MAA11050 for ; Thu, 27 Feb 1997 12:23:51 -0500 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca (lotus.uwaterloo.ca [129.97.140.9]) by math.uwaterloo.ca (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id MAA04207 for ; Thu, 27 Feb 1997 12:23:50 -0500 (EST) Received: by lotus.uwaterloo.ca id <24>; Thu, 27 Feb 1997 12:09:52 -0500 Received: from arl-img-2.compuserve.com ([149.174.217.132]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <16>; Thu, 27 Feb 1997 12:09:03 -0500 Received: by arl-img-2.compuserve.com (8.6.10/5.950515) id MAA22561; Thu, 27 Feb 1997 12:08:50 -0500 Date: Thu, 27 Feb 1997 12:07:08 -0500 From: dennis barton <70531.2124@CompuServe.COM> To: Subject: sgroup drum loops on s750/s770 Message-ID: <970227170708_70531.2124_FHH48-1@CompuServe.COM> Sender: owner-sgroup@lotus.uwaterloo.ca Precedence: bulk Status: R Ooops, corrected those late night spelling mistakes.. --------------- Hi all, There's a weirdness in the OS of the 750 and 770 that makes setting drum loops awkward.. Am i doing something wrong or is there a workaround? After I record a loop, I want to adjust the pitch so it's at, say 100 bpm. I set my sequencer playing a single whole measure note over at 100 and change the pitch of the sample. I can go in and shut off the key follow so any note will trigger that sample at the same speed. So far so good. Now, if I want to go to the page where I set start times, the sample key follow is now back on, so I cannot use this method to set the start time... Make sense? I suppose you mean looping mode by "the page where I set start times". That would explain why key follow is on. When you are looping a sample you are in sample mode, and key follow is set in partial mode. I've noticed a little bit hiss at the end of long samples. The kicks from Bob Clearmountain (and the toms too) Drums II were the most noticable. Then I tried the Rhythm Section, all samples are a bit hissy. The hiss is like a noise gate, open an closing. When sitting idle, the sampler is incredibly quite. But when I record silent sample, (I'm not feeding anything to the input), there's still the annoying hiss, enchanced if I play a chord on the controller. I've worked with many samplers, but still don't know if they all have same trouble. I mean if you listen it thru a studio monitor, the hiss is most likely unoticable. Is your S760 connected to your expensive digital console via analogue inputs? Have you listened to the headphone output of the S760 itself? And if you are sampling silence, how high is the input gain or digital attenuation? I, personally have had no hiss or noise problems on my S760, but I'm always interested in others' experiences with the unit. As for how it compares with other samplers, I couldn't offer any insight.
