Let's see if I can't point you in the right direction. After sampling, go to the menu to choose EDIT and select SPLIT. This is where you assign tones across the keyboard to make a patch. You may also want to select PATCH PARAMETERS from the EDIT menu to name your patch and set up other items. Now go to PLAY, move to a part (A - H) and select your patch and assign a MIDI channel and relative volume. Sorry for being so brief, but I'm at work and don't have access to the machine or manual to go into any deeper detail. Good luck! Are DART and Diskcopy disck copying utilities? Are they strictly for the MAC? And Jon asked: > Will the system disk be available to? Last night I tried loading the Utility disk and got an "incompatible software version" error message. So I did a CHANGE SYSTEM. Then the Utility disk loaded OK. Does this mean that there is System software on the Utility Disk? I'm leaving town for the weekend but when I return, I'll try this: 1. Power up my S550 with the usual two sound disks. 2. Insert the new Utility disk. 3. Do a change system command. 4. Put in an old sound disk and do a save system command. 5. Power down and reboot using the altered sound disk. If this works, I'll be spending the next few months doing save system to my disks. I'll also do the samdisk thing with a proper sound disk and upload it to the ftp site. As I type this message, the Utility samdisk file is uploading, but as I warned before, it is experimental as it isn't a sound disk as samdisk expects. It has been the sequencer I've used since I bought my first S-550 in late 1988. TOPIC 2: I've been sampling a Boss DR-550 drum box for the archives. (George - let me know if you already have this so I don't duplicate effort.) I'm learning a LOT. For example, in tone I11, 0.4s, I've concatenated all the kick drum sounds plus a few other short sounds to conserve memory space. I set it up to play only the first kick sample and, through the use of subtones, play the other samples. This method conserves sample memory but eats up tones. I've run out of tones to use (limit 48 per sound disk) and still have memory left over! Another thing I've leaned is that in order to have one hihat sample cancel another hihat (open vs. closed), I'd need a way to assign only one note of polyphony to a part that has the hihat samples assigned to it. But the S-550 only goes down to 2, not 1, per part. So I went to the hihat patch and put it into the unison mode (and detuned it of course!) so that each hihat sample uses up both notes! Now a second hit cancels the first on a part assigned two note polyphony. Yum! It's a pattern style sequencer. You string the patterns into songs, I think the songs have a limit of 200 measures, but it can hold six songs which can be chained together with a minimal delay. I haven't tried this so I wouldn't know for sure. You can adjust the length and time signature for each pattern, the only limit is the number of events per pattern which I don't remember. My only complaints with it is you either record with or without quantization, no post- quantization, and it doesn't record sys ex messages. You can edit events and it has copy/merge functions. Director S, in my opinion doesn't replace a good computer sequencer, but if you don't have a computer or want something to sequence for a performance I'd say it's pretty good. S.A. P.S. I should also mention that it is supposed to be able to read MC-500 disks. With my order, I received a THIRD CD for 0 Pounds, which is a demo of their catalogue, and contains tracks taken from other CDs, but it's very useful indeed. Be warned ! At this time X-Static Goldmine II should be already out, containing other 2500 samples or so... No, I read S-550 format but only write S-750 (or SoundDesigner II) So how many more use SoundDesigner and would benefit from it? Or could someone re-sample in a common format? Or do I spare myself the trouble? > sampling CD's, containing something like 3000 Acid/Techno I have something called "The extatic goldmine," a swedish-produced double sampling CD, and ititt's very good (a lot of my loops come from there, at least initially) From lotus.uwaterloo.ca!sgroup-owner Fri Apr 23 11:45:53 1993 Received: from math.uwaterloo.ca ([129.97.140.144]) by watdragon.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <88210-1>; Fri, 23 Apr 1993 11:45:47 -0400 Received: from lotus.uwaterloo.ca by math.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id ; Fri, 23 Apr 93 11:45:44 -0400 Received: from hemul.nada.kth.se ([130.237.225.20]) by lotus.uwaterloo.ca with SMTP id <41>; Fri, 23 Apr 1993 11:41:37 -0400 Received: by hemul.nada.kth.se (5.61-bind 1.4+ida/nada-mx-1.0) id AA22164; Fri, 23 Apr 93 17:41:17 +0200 Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1993 11:41:17 -0400 From: d88-jwa@nada.kth.se Message-Id: <9304231541.AA22164@hemul.nada.kth.se> To: borzieri@oliveb.ATC.Olivetti.Com, sgroup@lotus Subject: Re: To George : CD title Status: R > Be warned ! It appeared some times ago, can't say exactly when, as I own an Amiga, and don't buy ST Format. I made a copy of the article. : "..... This is a double CD with 3023 samples - the first CD is dedicated to drums and percussion. Tracks one to 32 contain breakbeats from vynil, drum machines and live percussion. There are 16 per track, grouped accor- ding to styles or drum machine and most give you tempo in BPM. Tracks 33 to 93 are filled with single drum hits, between 16 and 24 per track. The hits come from all the great dance drum machines - including Roland TR808, TR909, CR78e. After sampling this lot you''l have every drum sound you're likely to ever need. Disc two opens with eight tracks of house and rap vocals - 16 to a track, varying from the great to the silly. Tracks nine to 16 gives you every kind of acid and techno bass and a few bass loops for inspiration. The rest of this disc is full of ravey synth noises, strings, pianos and basses, vocal snatches, and sound effects. There are some great Vocoder loops - synthy percussion rhytms - and wonderful ambient swirls for new age house tracks. The sound effects are less useful - unless you enjoy lawnmowers on the dancefloor - but there are some good earthy effects for mellow intros. If you're a hardcore rave and techno enthusiast and looking for a sample library , this is it ! It's an encyclopedia of dance music, and as well as giving you a nervous twitch, it should keep your sampler warm for months. Highly recommended." Price : 79 pounds. Contact : 44-0442-870681 Fax : 44-0442-877266 .... The magazine gave it a rating of 92 out of 100, and keep in mind that (I don't know if this is still true, however I received them about 3 weeks ago), that for orders over 49 pounds (and this would be one :), you'll receive a third CD which they call a demo, but is full of useful samples (about 1000 !). These are wha-wha guitars (I love them !), effects, synths, spacey sounds, voices, breakbeats, and so on ! Bye, Ivan
